hi all sifu,my bro's E36 318i auto yr 92 has a problem.i wonder what is the light attached suppose to mean?it appear after 5-15 minutes of ride & never gone unless i stop the car & restart again...when tis icon appear,i feel like the car cant engage to 1st gear even i push to neutral & pull back to D.so when tis problem occur,& im at the middle of a junction/traffic turn to green,i hv to gif it a full acceleration so tat the car can move.pls advise....thanks in advanceView attachment 1478

i think so,fren of mine got an E36 318i also facing tis problem b4 but he cant recall back what the roof cause,he told me maybe brake sensor...possible?

shift program warning light.

you should be stuck in 3rd gear with the light on in other words you are in LIMP MODE. do a obd check with a modic or gt1 at a reputable mech before any further damage is done.

That is the warning light that there is some problem with the Auto transmission.

If the problem persist, the auto would go an an "LIMP" mode. When it goes to this mode, the auto transmission is engage into 3 rd gear and would not shift. It will allow you to drive to your workshop for repair or check.

Some of the problem related to Auto transmission are:-
1. Low oil fluid in the gearbox. (Usually happen after radiator replacement)
2. Shift solenoids in the gearbox faulty.
3. Gearbox ATF is either contaminate or ATF filter in gearbox is clogged.

Recommend that you sent to workshop to check ASAP to save money in the long run. It could lead to more serious problem such as Gearbox overhaul.

Plus I would think drving around in 3rd gear not much fun, folks must think woman driver in front dunno which gear is which hehehe
