Just want to share with you all my thoughts on my F10 528i MSports after a week of ownership. Managed to eke out just over 500km on my first tank- driving mainly around central KL, so spent a lot of time stuck in traffic. Love the car. The way it handles, the acceleration, the feel of it. 3 issues that bug me: 1) rims get absolutely filthy very fast. Gotta clean them regularly. 2) no space to put a full length umbrella3) lousy GPS The HUD is fantastic. Love the way the directions are displayed in front of you- no need to glance down at the monitor. However, the official map installed is terrible. Outdated (half of Mutiara Damansara still not on, the new access road to Taman Seputeh from Federal Highway on the way towards KL not on the map, flyover towards town near Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka not on) and takes me on all sorts of routes that do not make sense. Is there any way of fixing this GPS problem? It is a shame having the amazing HUD map display function but minimise using it due to crappy software. I find myself referring to googlemaps on my ipad to get proper directions. Amazing that BMW are shipping 2012 cars out with 2009 GPS maps. Ken

hello keny,

i am using the 528 msport as well. i share your sentiment.

I bought a papago GPS to solve the lousy GPS problem. LOL

Glad that you like your new 528i. The few roads that you mentioned above are actually kind of new, relatively speaking. All the map providers (papago, garmin, google etc) get their map data from national land surveyors board directly or indirectly. It takes a while for the land surveyors board to update any new road, new ramp, new highway, new building and newly developed area in their database system. It takes even longer for this new information to reach the map providers. So it is not unreasonable that the map in our gps is outdated. However, for a highway that has been completed in 2007 i.e. the Maju Exressway (MEX, from KL to Putrajaya) to not appear in the gps map in our F10, I would say that it doesn't make sense at all. Yes, if you travel on the MEX you will find that it's empty on our gps map. If you search it in google maps you will find it there. It shows that our F10 are not equipped with the lates possible gps map for the reason only known to BMW. I have a feeling that map update will not be made available to us free-of-charge, provided that there is any at all.

Guys, I have a Jan 2012 F10, MEX is on the GPS - my GPS version is 2009. You need to see your dealer.

Bro,

The 2012 maps is already available:
http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/showthread.php?47036-2012-Malaysia-Singapore-Thailand-is-now-available!

If you got your car from a dealership, then you need to go 'taruk' them la! 2009 maps is very old. They should have at least loaded the 2011 maps for your car (if say car came to their showroom early this year or late last year). However, since you got your car last week, they should have already have gotten the 2012 maps in possession. So, you can push for them to load it for you without charging you for it.

You got ripped off by the dealer by getting an obsolete version of the maps. I'd be mighty upset. Last year in May they already had the 2011 maps and I got my UK maps flashed and replaced with the MY one.

Hi Keny,

I am a newbie in the midst of deciding between 520i and 528i. The premium between them is quite high.

I have test drive the 528i and must say that the HUD is fantastic especially if you can use it with GPS.

Did you manage to get the latest map from BMW dealer?

I think you'd be better off buying a 520d or 528i and leave the 520i aside? :)

Aoch88,

Thanks for your comments.

I have decided on a petrol car as I am not a high user.

After test drive, I like both 520i and 528i but need more justification to pay an extra 51k for 528i.

So far the most compelling reason is the steering wheel and paddle shift as I can live without the other upgrades.

Any reason that I should stay away from 520i ? Appreciate your feedback as I will be making my decision very soon :)

After making some noise to the dealer two days ago about having to live with an outdated gps map, I received a call from them today telling me that they will "order" the latest map for me and give me a free update. No lead time was given though. Will see how it goes and report here about the progress.

I have MEX on my GPS. So maybe mine is the latest 2012 map- SA still checking for me.

But it doesn't take away from the fact is that it is a lousy GPS system (which reduces the attractiveness of the HUD). Driving route suggested is not the one I would use more than 50% of the time. Am still not familiar with parts of Klang Valley (have been away from Malaysia most of my life), so I still need directions. If there was some way of mounting my ipad with googlemaps.... that would be ideal.

I agree with bro aoch88. I would prefer to get the 520d over the 520i. I test drove all 3 F10 variants, and took a long while to decide between the 520d and 528i.

Hi NW,

Although this may be wrong forum for this issue, i will still attempt to reply some issues here and hopefully do not get flamed for getting out of line. :) I was asking the same question in a post couple of months back before I bought my 528i.

1. based on the extras on the 528i versus the 520i, it is already a better deal, you easily save > RM10K based on the M kits add on alone - perceive value is already a winner,
2. many forummers are upgrading their steering wheel to the M Sport specced one, even our tai kor Paul has done so,
3. no way that you can add a HUD, it's not something that you may add on later - on top of that, it is a 2nd generation HUD compared to the Orange colored only one, the usability when integrated with the GPS is really cool,
4. how the car looks especially when you view it from the front, it gives the whole car a sportier/angrier stance - barring the 535i mods.....,
5. little know fact is that the 528i comes with a 16 speaker Professional sound system instead of a 12 speaker one - but don't ask me where did they hide the remaining 4, :)
6. you can mod your 520i engine to a 528i powered engine or more, however you void you warranty and the mod comes with a price too, so drive it hard when the warranty is there - isn't a turbo meant to be driven hard and loud?

The list can go on honestly... but market forces seem to indicate that BMW owners are sharp individuals which explains why the 528i is a better deal as compared to the 520i - check with the SA on the demand supply numbers for the 2 litre petrols! You will get a good idea.

Just take the plunge bro, you have not seen anyone here regretting the 528i..... even if it is just a 4 pot turbo and enJOY the ride!

I have been driving my 528 since Feb 2012 and it's really super. Whenever I am alone and need to Zoom, it never fail me.
However, recent trip to Taiping the GPS failed. It doesnt allow me to enter street names in Taiping. My iphone maps and Papagp works perfectly...Anyone has answer to that?

BMW's map is crap, that's the only plausible answer. It is not great compared to the maps that you can get from MFM or MSM. After using the car since Feb 12', my wife's resorted to buying a Garmin 3790....

Bro, Thanks for your helpful comments.

Have not taken the plunge yet. Could not make up my mind before financial year end March 2012 :-(

Concur with your observation that for extra RM51k 528i appears to have more “value” if compare with 520i:
(1) Sports leather steering wheel
(2) Gearshift Paddle on steering wheel
(3) Head-up Display
(4) Body Kit
(5) M light alloy wheels 18"
(6) Hi Fi system 600W 16 loudspeakers (cf 205W 12 loudspeakers)
(7) Internal trims - Shadow Line & Aluminium Hexagon

Now in favour of 528i but current stock (for my colour choice) not available until later part of the year...

Heard that BMW will be launching ActiveHybrid 5 end of this month ... anybody got details and OTR price?
