Nankangs aplenty and still nobody has heard of Pirelli P7? Surely this cannot be. :dunno: Did you know you could get the Pirelli P7 in 225/50/17? Yup it comes in 50 series for 17 inch. But what sets it apart from the Dragon? :dunno:
Hi Bimmerman

I've been wondering the same myself - what's the diff between P7 and dragon that is. Also particularly interested in the 50 series for my 17" AC type 4 replica preferably with the Dragon.

Any views from sifus and curent users of these rubbers? I need to replace my tires very soon. Thanx & cheers.

Faiz

Hi Faiz, unfortunately the Dragons do not come in 50 series for 17" 225 or 235. Only the P7 comes in that size. Apart from the Dragon and P7 both being of the Assymetrical design I have totally no idea how their pricing and performance differ. :dunno:

Hopefully someone can enlighten us soon.....

hi faiz..

i currently using dragon..225/40/18.. i must say they are quite good for the money that we payy.

i got mine at around RM550 per piece..

dunno how much is it for 17

Hey there guys n gals..

Been spending waaaaayy to much on the cars recently, but the e23 needs new tyres soon, probably within the next couple of months.. Any recommendation on tyres.. sort of shortlisted the Michelin Pilot Preceda or Pirelli Dragon, just wondering if they come in 225/50/16 and price estimate...

Thanks...

Well lets compare the threads: P7 and Dragon both assymetrical. The Dragon's have bigger spread of thread so looks more suited for dry weather while the P7's has closer threads, hence wet weather preferred. P7 has been around for some time as I've seen it on e39's and I must say the compound is pretty soft and its also listed more expensive than Dragon. So like everyone has been saying the Dragon's are more value for money but the question is, are you in the market for sports shoes or a nice pair of loafers. I'm sure the Dragon's will perform well in both conditions but the P7's are less sporty but comfortable.

p.s: All the above statements are in theory only as I have never used either tyres :D

I got the following size info from the Pirelli website for Malaysia. Quite obviously the Dragon is the more stylish and better 'summer'tyre having been made exclusively for Asian and Middle East countries. The website only lists the P7000 (older and hence different from the 'P7'?) and in 2 size ranges at that. I wonder how current this info. is at:

I think Bimmerman and I are interested in the 50 series aspect ratio for somewhat similar reasons - to help reduce tramlining which seems to be a 'feature' of 17" and above wheels shod with wide tyres. With the e34 and perhaps with other udm's as well, the 225/50/17 tyre size range is known to perform better to control tramlining. I think my rim width is 8.0 to 8.5. If Pirelli doesn't have the size, perhaps someother good tyre that does below RM500/pc? Cheers all.

Hi all

Just changed my front tyres to Michelin pilot precedas (225/45/17) at Hup Soon, Sunway for RM450/pc. Had Yoko ES100 all round and wanted to look around a bit before changing but some ******* metal piece trashed the left rear tyre so no choice but to cvhange! Had the front Yokos with some 40-50% bunga moved to the back. Well as I drove back with the Micehlins in front it seems that much of the tramlining is gone together with the noise. I think some on-wheel balancing is still needed though. Anyway, new tyres mar... must drive arund for some time I s'pose before can tell the real performance of the precedas. Just my 2 sen.

Rgds

Bro, good to hear you have new shoes. Now all you need to do is to get your wheels properly balanced and aligned. I've never had a good experience balancing and aligning at Hup Soon. Buy their tire pricing is hard to beat though!

Bimmerman,
Nice cute pic of e34 you have in your sig. line - just noticed. Well, while at Hup Shun, I did enquire bout several brands and their price did sound very reasonable (even b4 I mentioned the club!) and also possible to bargain a bit too. Can't remember exactly but initial quotes for most tyres I asked about were in the RM400-500's including Firenza (430), Falken (450), Yoko db aspec (480), Yoko C-drive (500+ i think) - all in 225/60/17. Was seriously thinking of Pirelli dragons but was quoted at 550 for the 235/45 range. As I said, looks possible to haggle to about rm30-40 below. Finally decided on the precedas afetr checking with sifu Albundy on the phone... Of course, returned home and read more reviews about the 'quietest performance tire in the market'!

As you said, must now get the alignment/balancing done and let the tyre run in to see how it really performs. Cheers and good luck on your quest.

Faiz

Forgot to mention - Albundy bought the Precedas for RM470 but I got it for 450 and I think it might be possible to go down a bit more if more club members go there. Do check this out.

Rgds, Faiz

Glad you are happy with it so far. I have no complains as well after having these tires for close to 3 months now. As for the price, I was comfortable with my current tire shop. I know their price is slightly higher but they do a fantastic job on the balancing and alignment and best of all, they provide great after sales service, something which most tire shops do not provide anymore. (sometimes he charged me RM5 for on wheel balancing!) :D

Rgds

Al, thanks. Like i said earlier major probs somewhat solved for now. Just drove to S Jaya and back and i think must do on-wheel balancing (was in a hurry to get home from Hup Shun, also many customers, so didn't ask for it - don't know whether they'd have charged extra). Hub-centric rings were put in anew Prolly will do it at my regular shop in Serdang. Still nicer now to drive - hope i didn't pick up a speed ticket on the way to SJ this morning. Cilaka betul, usually oncoming cars will flash lights :dunno: and i oni managed to brake to 100kmh when i passed the camera with a Satria on tow!

Just changed to P7 last week.

Initial reaction - excellent handling and grip but surprisingly noise level is relatively higher even though its still new

If we are to point the 'finger' as the real cause is the allowance of 'natural devaluation' of the Ringgit by the government !!
