On a more serious note, the only disadvantage I foresee is when filling up......in most petrol stations, there's sometimes all but one pump for diesel. And then, you have the lorries and buses........

ennui, lorries n buses noozle cant fit in cars

You guys will be surprised to know 520D in even faster in overall.... The new gearbox in 5 series is making big different.

Yup but slight heavier about 75kg different. 520D used newer generation gearbox, that's make a different. Just look at the rim, 320D using 17inc and 520D using 18inc, 0-100km/h for 3 is 8.0sec and 5 is 8.4sec. If 520D using 17inc, what do you think the different is?

u've said it..0.4 second slower...how could it be faster than?

i think he meant if the 520d used 17inch rims instead, it would be at par or faster than the 320d? just my interpretation...

then..might as well change the 3 series rims to 15 inches to be fair...

bottom line is..stock vs stock..

U guys are so lucky to have this excellent 320d in msia. I'm a msian living in spore, been having my E90 320i close to 4.5 yrs. It's a fine driving machine but with a bit more torque like the turbo diesel, it'll be perfect. The road tax is more than 2x that of petrol equivalent and thus doesnt make sense to own one in Spore.

The governments on both sides of the causeway are in the dark ages as far as green tech like diesel is concerned. But all that is set to change very quickly in the next few years.

Is it really true that the smaller the wheel, the faster the car? Then why don't we all switch to 12" rims? :D

wider tires have more contact with road surface... in terms of pickup, the wider the slower

You're right about the dark age. In Europe, almost all the cars are diesel driven. They dont seem to have any issue with the emission, CO2 etc, in fact, diesel offers better efficiency hence better utilization of our depleting resources. Anyway, I can see the change in Msia where owning a diesel car doesnt have to blow a big hole in the pocket. Lets hope the same thing can happen in Spore where THEY can scarp the ridiculous diesel tax.

I still remember my dad used to own a Merc 300D and i never forget the grin on his face everytime he was behind the wheel. Then one day the Msian govenm increased the road tax to RM27,000 per year...and the rest is history.

Dark ages:
1) Thinking that drivers must pay a premium somewhere if their fuel is cheaper (taxes should encourage, not discourage green tech adoption)
2) Thinking that petrol is more high class and not wanting too many diesel cars on their roads (the exact opposite is true now)

To be fair, the US is not much brighter either. But you have to hand it to the Europeans for their advanced thinking.

I guess it has everything to do with living standard.. if my E90 can run on kerosene, I would pour it in too.. :p :D Environmental friendliness?! Most of us here only know the difference between riding a "cupchai" versus the luxury of driving a 4-wheeler, especially on rainy season.. quality of ride, emission standard and safety standard will have to take a back seat for now and for a reasonable time line... and to make matter worst, the public transport system here is hopeless.. you are better off driving a 10 year old Kancil with worn piston ring and valve seals with smokey exhaust, than keep missing your appointments or late for work.. sigh!

Until the time the majority of the Rakyat can afford to change a new car every 3 years or 100k km, then we can talk/demand.. until then .. :105:

I'm taking a 6 year loan and looks like I'll be stuck with this 4-potter for good long while.. my next upgrade, with God willing, should be coming out from my EPF.. that if provided my children are all smart enough to get scholarships.. :(

Pound for pound, diesel is actually a cheaper fuel to produce than petrol. But petrol is heavily subsidised 'for the majority of the rakyat' and because local makes are still petrol-based. Think of it...our petrol price is 1/2 that in Singapore and Thailand, 1/3 that in the UK and 1/4 that in Europe. I think all that has more to do with politics than standard of living.

ohh now only i know spore have higher tax for diesel cars...if the tax is lower then the 320d is very suitable for spore roads too ..no need to drive fast to hav fun, when overtaking u can hav fun already...:)

green issues r also something that we should start paying attention to..although the actions of one person have minute impact on the overall enviroment, at least better than nothing...the gov is the one who should take the step to encourage anything that is going in the green direction...but as we all can see...the gov simply doesnt like to do the correct thing..they always like to do the wrong thing

I agree with you that diesel cars are more suitable in spore's start-stop traffic and without much long distance to speed, thus cars with higher torque are more fun to drive. I'm not scaring you guys, here is what I got from the Land Transport Authority website:

12 months roadtax for car with capacity of 2000cc

Petrol Engine : S$1214 (appx RM3000)
Disel Engine Euro IV/ Euro V : S$3714 (appx RM9100)
Diesel Engine without Euro V : S$8498 ( appx RM 21,000)

Isn't the above figures ridiculous? If diesel is more than twice as bad as petrol where environmental issue is concerned, then they have a case :(

You know the public transport is running on diesel and the happiest drivers in spore are the TAXI DRIVERS!! They're driving Merc, Skoda, hyundai, etc. all turbo-charged diesel engines. When u guys come to spore, please don't mess around with the uncle driving a Skoda cos if he tekan minyak, you'll be left in the dust, can't even smell his diesel exhaust fume and worse, your girl friend will be slapping your face.

Here, we know why the slant is on petrol lah. But there do you know why? Because diesels are only good enough for public transport, and if there are too many private diesel cars running around, it would spoil the IMAGE! Dark ages I told you... :D

A young relative in the UK drives a diesel 3er, and he told me they were more highly regarded than petrol 3ers there.

dont we all know turbo diesel is much better drive than the petrol equivalent simply because of the enormous amount of torque, not to mention they're far less thirsty than petrol so i can see why they're much highly sort after in UK. In Msia, it's slowly getting the recognition it deserve, however the majority of the people still think otherwise. In spore, it's almost non existence because the gov forbid it, for whatever reason, only they know.

Btw, how much is the road tax for a 2000cc diesel car?
