Hi guys,

I just got an e38 for my better half, '96 model year. A 728i, quite well cared for, looks and runs great, engine and transmission smooth etc.

I did all the suspension arms and bushes on her, all new leather for the seats, new headlining and a,b and c pillars retrimmed. Door cards were good so those were left alone. Fitted a decent stereo with full bluetooth connectivity with adaptors so it would work off the steering controls. And a security tint to protect my lady.

Problem here is that my girl complains the cars too slow for her :). She loves the car otherwise, it looks and rides great and It's initial get up and go isn't too bad, probably due to low gearing. But that 2.8 M52 only has so much grunt and starts to run out of puff once you get going. Looking at my options, I think the only route for me would be to supercharge it. Power gains on a 2.8 with chipping etc would be minimal, and if this task is going to be worth the effort, I'd need at least a 50hp gain to see it through.

Anyone know of anyone who does supercharging here? Or even has a kit leftover :). I think I could undertake the install myself if I had all the bits (I have a garage at home with all the necessary tools).

All tips, advice and info welcome,

Thanks in advance guys!

Kris

GO FOR IT!!

hey bro , congrats on your new ride please share some pictures as i am restoring one too , e38 supercharged transporter WOW!

Thanks guys, will try and post some pics. Again if anyone has any leads on supercharging it locally, let me know.

V8 Zidee? LOL! Would be better to buy a 740 than go through all the mods required (engine, suspension, brakes, wiring etc). And this 728 is a bit of a minter. Most that I saw (a couple of 740s included) were in a sad state unfortunately.

I have E38 electric comfort seat for sale. Re wrapped at Ah Kit. Grey. That is the best seat ever. Change it as I change whole my E39 interior to black. Currently using E39 M-Sport electric black leather.

Any luck finding a tuner locally?

what about shipping in an ESS stage 2 twin screw SC kit, probably gonna set you back something like USD 6k . not sure if they have a stage 2 for the M52 though

Hey guys,

Sorry for not replying sooner dangerzone, have been flat out busy with work etc! Have asked around a bit for local tuners but not that positive to tell you the truth. Have looked at bringing in a kit from ESS, Vortech etc but the costs don't make sense when you look at the value of the car itself.

I did an exhaust upgrade and pulled the cats out. It's helped a bit but the gf still complains it's too slow :)

Thanks for the lead on Proreka. Have dropped them pm, will see what they say!

cheers,
Kris

yeah thats true. Then again, if you plan to keep the car and have the extra cash. why not ? I'd definitely go down that path if i could. ;)

Also, putting up with everyone asking "why not just put a V8 in it"

How much to supercharge an E38 locally? What are the end results?

Appreciate any info that can be shared.

Hi dangerzone, and also krish,

want to share the cost of the blueprint/whiteprint of this supercharger build?

maybe we can purchase together.

Woah guys, sorry for dropping off this thread but was busy getting married among other things!

I went ahead and got a set of prints for that supercharger design that Hyde from NZ developed (M52supercharged.wordpress now known as hydemotorworks link here https://hydemotorworks.com/ . He's done good work, very detailed, exact measurements and everything fit as it should.

I ended up laser cutting the brackets out of stainless steel plate :), managed to source an SC14 from mudah, and finished the whole thing just last month in fact (over a course of 6 months mainly working evenings).Among the things I had to do was to remove the power steering pump and bracket, fit the SC bracket then bolt the PS pump back on. Also relocate the power steering fluid container, redirect some water hoses. I also had to remove the viscous fan and fitted a thermo switch controlled electric fan as per Hyde's directions.

Mixed feelings on the results. She's got a fair bit more go now but think there should be more available once I get a proper tune down. Any one know of anyone who can flash tune the DME MS41? I suspect fueling is low. I'm only running around 5 psi of boost but even then....best to check and see.

A lot more grunt but downside is that supercharger is noisy. Probably won't notice it as much in a 3 or 5 especially with a performance exhaust I guess, but the 7 is/was serene :) .

cheers,
Kris

Before installing the supercharger, you might want to consider if your factory rods will hold up? The added boost & stress on the engine cold be deadly. There are some threads about superchargers on this forum, but there have only been a couple of people that went this way. One of them had there engine blow up.
