and you have to own the car for at least 9 months before bringing it back to malaysia. you have to show car logbook (geran) and insurance to prove this. i dont know about hk, but in uk there are shipping people that can get around this.

I'm back in Malaysia(KL) for good. Thanks for the previous info/response. Brought back my z3 without much hassles. Just want to share info for anybody who might be facing the same dilemma.

Firstly, you can check this guideline/article at this site (in malay language & they put bmw 735 as an example!) http://www.kastamselangor.gov.my/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=91

Quite straight forward. You can apply first before shipping the vehicle or immediately after you ship it.
1)Get the JK 69 form
2)Submit form to MITI (attached relevant documents i.e registration card, previous insurance policy..you need to own the car for at least 9 months)
3)AP process around 5-7 working days
4)AP approved + collect AP
5)present AP to custom
6)custom declare tax + pay (no credit card)
7)collect car at receiving port

but after custom, it requires some running here and there (runner may charge around 500-800 or maybe less)...
1)car insurance
2)temporary licence from jpj
3)puspakom inspection
4)e-registration
5)registration at jpj

Voila!

Hope this info helps especially for those who needs it.. and i guess some otais sure got the kids studying abroad now..bring back more beemers or probably some EMWs, Veritas or Frazer-Nash...

Initially mine was 12k++, after appeal, reduced to 10k++..I'm not sure how the calculation was done..probably they categorized my z3 in classic rather than sports car.

i'm currently studying in newcastle, uk and i'm going back for good on september 2013.

i'm planning to purchase 2 vehicles as i got 2 Student APs (1 mine, another from a friend)

i'm planning to get a BMW for my mom, with model preferred is the 530i, followed by 525i - 520i - 330i - 325i - 320i; all depending on the amount of TAX i have to pay for it as the BMW prices for the model i mentioned is more or less the same (about 10k-15k; 2007/2008).

i believe the student AP entitles me to some tax exemption (is it Import Duty and/or Sales Tax, but not Excise Duty)?

may i know how much TOTAL tax i have to pay once i got the car here later next year?

i'm also planning to get myself a volkswagen scirocco (2.0), may i know how much the tax i have to pay for it if 1)2007, 2)2008 & 3) 2009 model?
i'm considering a new beetle (2012, 1.4) too but i heard if it's a new car the tax will be much higher. what will be tax i need to pay if i'm getting a 2012 beetle (1.4)?

i've tried the calculator here (http://www.floristhut.com/taxkastam4.htm) but the amount that come out is ridiculous (>RM300,000.00!!!)

Bro, no use posting here as we are not Customs officer who actually deals with these calculations.

Best bet, what I did before I came back was I opened the Customs website and tried calling a few Customs officer and asked them to give rough quotations.

Of course, calling up government servants asking them for a free favour is not easy to say the least, but prepare to 'tahan telinga' a bit and try calling a few on the officers list and you may get a helpful chap to help you out. I did.

Can't remember the officers name, but as with most goverment servants, sometimes the males are more helpful. It was a guy last time who helped me to calculate and gave me some rough calculations.

I agree with Haywire that it'll be more informative if u can reach the custom office.

I faced the same problem in 2010 but i was very fortunate that mine was less than what i expected. In my opinion, the general estimate will be:

Price of your car (in RM) + tax (RM) = half of the price of same model/year second hand car in malaysia.

Btw, my friend brought back an e240 (year 2002) in 2010 and had to pay tax of rm40k ++.
