In August 1996, I brought in a 2-year old (mileage apprx:20K) C220 from UK. I bought it at 22,500Pound (xchange rate was 4.1) (close to RM93K). Two months later, the car arrived in Port Klang and it took me 2 weeks to get clearance from custome. The shipment cost was considered reasonable.

However, I did pay excise tax approximately RM68K and cost me all in around RM165K. With student status (or M'sian expatriate status), ones is exempted from import tax (AP) once in a life time. You can apply the AP from M'sin consulate in London (at one time AP was witheld for ecomomic reason) or possibly tru e-govt website.

The amount of the excise tax depends on the current market price backhome regardless your purchase price in UK. It also depends on the discretion of the custome officer and the valuation dept offficer based on the appearance/condition and the mileage of your X5. You need to prove that you have owned that particular car at least 6 months prior to your shipment date.

Through my experience in 1996, I enjoyed the saving about RM45K-50K and worth all the hassle. The only set back is that you need to customise the cooling system (remove the heater from the engine and change the radiator/thermostat) and install air-conditioning system, all in, might be around RM10K-12K (X5 compressor unit is really dear bro!!).

Be sure that your X5 engine is close to perfect and really at reasonable price because parts (brand new or 2nd hand) are considerably high backhome. Dont tell your friends that you are paying almost the same price if you were to buy the same 2nd hand unit here.

If the model you wish to buy is equipped with iDrive, be sure that the specs and format for the nav system is compatible backhome. I advise you to get the chasis + engine numbers, and cross check with Auto Bavaria or any authorised dealers in M'sia to ensure the setting could be done accordingly (this was exactly what I did with Bintang Cycle & Carriage b4).
