However i must say one thing, even without the taxes the cars in Malaysia are much higher then UAE. Example, one of my engineers got a 523i full spec (the version we don't get in Malaysia) with 5 years services, 5 years warranty for 235K AED (2 guys purchased togather so they got some additional discounts), which is roughly 200K RM. Given the cost of living in UAE is much higher, workshop costs is absorbidant etc....i would have expected a car to be more expensive in UAE but the reality is otherwise, its still higher in Malaysia...which leads me to believe BMW Malaysia has good margins on their cars!

Hi, fyi the margin is more less the same...the difference is due to the sales tax and excise duties. I lived in Dubai before and had the opportunity to own e70 4.8 which I bought for aed285k and a 911 turbo for aed400k. the former would have cost me rm800k in kl; the latter - rm1.3mil. This is the fact of life.

Sad fact of life.

Perhaps cars running on petrol in Dubai is not a luxury, maybe running on water is; owning anything in Malaysia is a luxury.

Safri,
Sorry I have to disagree with you. Goks is correct. BMW malaysia does take a big fat chunk of margin from the principal i.e BMW HQ.

FYI BMW assembles the car itself here for some model and AB, Ingress,Quill and who ever becomes dealer will have a profit margin on top.

To be fair not just BMW does this, the biggest offender I would say wuld be Honda followed closely by toyota and proton.

The Korean are more honest in their pricing even though the local dealers tried their best to rip-off the Malaysian buyers tru nazak and simba.

We can't compare apple and orange.

Even if so called tax free, it's not really tax free as the components that are imported are also taxed. Our car taxes is one of the most complicated in the world. That being said let's not forget middle east is nearer to Europe than us, plus all their cars are CBU and duty free.

On top of that BMW Malaysia has to compete with grey importers that don't need to spend anything on CRM, Marketing and Promotion exercises. BMW Golf tournament, car launches, driving events and etc etc. It is not so easy as we are led to believe. Malaysia market is one of the toughest in the world with all the bureaucracy.

If you are close to the sales or the local dealers try to
find out how much they make per car. You will be astonished.

Cheers

That is no excuse for making excessive profits. Even Singapore PM has agreed to take a 36% salary paycut. Now his salary is only at SGD2.2million per year.

Is that an excuse for him to go for a shopping spree? I would think not. No offence ALbundy.

As people like me..well.. I guess I will have to make do with used cars..huhuhu..

OK going back to the original question, I personally would avoid the X1. The drive is supposedly nice but the car is fugly IMO and the equipment list is bare, no rear AC, no iDrive, less insulation according to what I've read here etc. Not worth it even for RM170k.

Agreed - just a few thousand bucks per car these days.

Goks, long-short if i were you, i would get the 528 msport and one of the 'high-end' locally-assembled SUVs.

Its Tempting Safri. Not sure if i can splurge that much monthly, bulk of my savings heading home is going into re-building a home we bought a year back...the question is, should the extra $$$ be used to part settle the loan or splurge on a UDM. On another note, being a salaried worker, i don't know if i will ever get another chance to Own one :)

Just wondering, for those of you who own the 5, is it paid by company or personal? While abroad its actually pretty little to spend 2.5K-3K a month on car (that is my car allowance now) coming home, i dont know if its norm to spend such amount from your salary, bearing in mind we are a single income young family.

Sigh! Tough decision...i think most likely my Mrs will go for a CRV.

you know best. All we can do is help you maximise the car benefits made available to someone like you. Take the 528 as your main car and you can always decide on the second car when you are back in kl. good luck

Thanks Safri. I will certainly consider the 528 as option 1 and my wife on the CRV.

frustrating

Booked the car end July with promise early Nov. Very frustrated with the poor quality of information from quill. Maybe I choose the wring salesman. The said car arrives early Nov, so they should have started the REP paperwork in Oct when car went into production. Now car is sitting in stockyard n only now those idiots started paperwork. Seriously if not for stock issues, would have stuck with ingress.

Damn Quill!

Well still haven't got my car, now further delays by inokom. Its sitting nicely though in the showroom for the last month. However, after pouring my frustration out, Quill have offered me a courtesy Car, which wasn't expected. Good on you Quill as it was a pleasant surprise.
Fingers crossed the car will arrive soon.
