Xcrave, any idea how to differentiate between M52 & M54 engine? I got the same problem as well where production date and my JPJ card are stated differently.

xcrave; Bukan hijack the thread but u already hacked it, btw thanks bro for sharing and wish one fine day we can have TT together. Mine is all stock and wish to learn from others for improvement.

Bro alex just stole my moment of glory... but then again Im having the same problem this is what im getting into... Japanese have a bad hobby of playing LEGO and then shipping them for AP buyers...

BTW i have a Double Vanos... So im Guessing im on the latest M52 (right before M54?)

M52TU has double vanos
M52TUB20

But called the dealer and said that... the best way is to compare c.c.

but when the car arrive from Japan, you think PUSPAKOM will bother to run a real engine cc test other than reading the AP details ... and copy it ? What if the Car had a transplant of M3?

On Second Thought: Look at this

I think i have the M54... Look at the Oil Level Stick (red stick) POSITION...

Your engine was the second pic of your post #26 right ? It was exactly same as mine and it was engine M52TUB20.
U bought the BMW Scanner right from sifu Jarance so why not u just plug in your car then u will get the answer lar..

Like i said bro VIN is printed when the car was born...

The Engine might be transplant (due to Recon) Cause ive compared with all the picture... it does not look llike the M52??? Hmmm maybe i just check the outside picture...
Anything else i need to see to very the engine is which type?

At my door it says 320i/323i? hmmmm... this is getting more odd...

Will check throughly before i conclude my engine type... but im 100% sure it is suppose to be M52...

I think if we refer to Alex's link earlier from Wikipedia, can clearly see that if you have a 320i, it only falls into two categories:

M52TUB20 which has a cubic capacity of 1991 CC (2000 cc )

OR

M54B22 which has a cubic capacity of 2171 CC (2200 cc)

M52 engine was used previously in E36 with single vanos. Whereas M52TU is the engine which has Technical Updates (hence the M52 --TU) which has double vanos and widely used in E46 320i.

The difference of M52TU and M54 is very minimal, limited to minimal ECU tuning and intake manifold.

Nup base on Wikipedia M54 engine only for production year 2001 onward but our friend car was 1999.
