Back in Ipoh for CNY holidays.Went searching for flower pots this morning and ended up buying a 325 SMG instead.Paid RM 142k for it from a dealer.Registered Dec 2003 to BMW MY and sold to this chap in Aug 2004 for RM 240k.Full purchase invoice from AB as well as repair bills came with the car.Mileage 39k only - checked all the AB and CarTrade bills and can confirm that mileage is correct.Dealer offered me RM 25k for my E36 325 so I decided to keep it since I spent over RM 40k on repair bills in the last 4 years and I still owe the finance company RM 11k.I am amazed at how easy to buy a car nowadays.First saw the car at 11 am and car delivered to me at 5 pm with 1 year road tax and Puspakom cert.Could not transfer today though.Did not even give any documents other than my IC.Loan from Hong Leong Islamic at about 3.5% and I am supposed to fax them my salary slip on coming Monday.Anyway, the question I have is, how to drive the car properly ?When I drove it home, I used the cruise and I feel that the gear change has a slight time lag before changing upwards. Is this normal ?Using SMG, do I release the accelerator before up or down shifting ?Does any one know whether SMG are problem prone ?Too late for me now but I can start saving now  Compared to my E36, it definitely feels more powerful and of course more luxurious.

Congrats for you new ride.:top:

This is some basic info on SSG / SMG1 325i:

1) Stick to C mode if you’re not sure how to use the paddle or stick. Until you really know how to use it.

2) Don’t keep in at 1st gear if you’re in the traffic jam. Push to N if your car is not moving.

3) In uphill situation apply brake even your in the 1st gear. It's not like any automatic transmission can hold your ride not to moving backward.

4) Switch your engine off with 1st gear. With N mode you can hear the alert sound.

5) Don't shift the paddle or stick with inproper engine rev.. ( hard to explain  ) you might spoil the acuater unit. Its will cost your a bomb if the acuater leak. You can learn how the C mode shift the gear.

Now is the SSG/SMG1 common problem.

SMG gearbox computer box attached at the gearbox itself. (design failure by the stupid Italian gearbox designer, computer box for gearbox in an M3 SMG which is by siemens is located the engine bay and covered) If you stuck in the jam during hot weather for quite sometime, the computer box cannot give proper input to the gearbox. Meaning you car cannot move even to press the fuel.

The solution is to open the under carriage engine cover to give more air circulation at the gearbox area. Or put your ceiling fan near the computer box:stupid:

This input from my 3 years exprience using an E46 SSG. Anyway is a very nice car to drive because it's manual...

Happy Chinesse New Year & have a nice holiday orang kampung.

Thanks, very useful info you have given. Appreciate it.
Yes, I noticed that unlike the auto when I try to inch forward withour pressing the accelerator, nothing happens. This means more petrol consumption since accelerator has to be pressed.
Why do I have to stop the engine in 1st gear ?

Do you have the manual handbook in your ride? you can go thru it. Just like any manual car, it's better to park in the 1st gear so that your car is not moving. For auto transmission you parked at P for parking and it will ensure you that car is not moving.

Thanks !Is it normal that under C, the upshift has a time delay unlike the normal auto ? This happens for evey gear change and not for selected gears.

That is normal. Don't worry about that. for checking purpose, you can go to AB for gearbox computer box setting. Do it at AB Sungai Besi look for Anesh (if you based in KUL).

jes be more xtra careful when deal wit SMG dude.................. Nice ride u got there...........Good luck

More power sometimes means more money....that is what Sequential Manual Gearbox stand for :)

6) you have to release a bit fuel before upshift and downshift. by doing this you can prolong the clutch pad life. if you dont do that aslo ok, no problem just that your clucth pad worn faster. FYI: clucth plate replacement kit cost is RM2800 plus labour.

bro, can you recommend where is the best workshop with the best price to change this,

my smg has start troubling me now.

bro, better go to the AB or Sapura, they have 2 years warranty on the parts, outside specialist the best they can give is 9-10 months warranty.

Price different is about rm1000 cheaper if u let outside specialist do it for u.

I rather option for the 2 years warranty, and AB have more experianced in handling such tech

I second that. For normal servicing you can do it anywhere, but come to gearbox please do it at AB. BMW Malaysia will attend you case if AB cannot solve it.

Good luck:cool:

Thanks. Currently maintain by Ultratune.. not so much difference from Sapura as i have service my car there once. Intend to change fast but still verifying....BTW how long do they keep your car?

Can you tell me you car symptom b4 u change this?

My current symtoms:

1. My gear is jerk when shift up after long traffic crawl. Feels like out of clutch plate as the gear only shift at 1500-3000 rpm.
I need to restart the car each time this happend to make it ok again.

2. New symptom (yesterday) : Difficult to shift gear (late), during drive (most of the time) suddenly the bip sound is up and the gear change to neutral.

any advice? Tq

For the symtoms i think u should ask the specialist and he will answer all the info u want to know:top:

IS EITHER YOUR HYDRAULIC SYSTEM IN YOUR GEARBOX OR YOUR ECU. MY ADVISE SEND YOUR CAR TO AB SUNGAI BESI AND GET THEM TO CHECK YOUR CAR. ASK THEM TO REPLACE YOUR ECU BEFORE REPLACE YOUR GEARBOX.

2. New symptom (yesterday) : Difficult to shift gear (late), during drive (most of the time) suddenly the bip sound is up and the gear change to neutral.

IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE OF THE ECU OR THE GEARBOX IS KAPUT.

any advice? Tq

It happen to me, I make a complaint to AB Sungai Besi. Take them 2 months to rectified my case. They changed the gearbox and the same thing happen again  and they change the ECU. After changing the ECU my car back to normal.

My advise get them to change the ECU before changing the gearbox. Asked for replacement car as well. It will take months to do it. And it will cost you a bomb.

Call BMW Malaysia (After Sales & Servise Department) as well and make the complaint about your car, they will moniter your car development and might give you goodwill warranty for the parts that they change for you. BMW Malaysia 03-88873888

Good luck

If you need further info, I can give you my phone no.
