Shifting from S to D

My 2001 E46 325i automatic transmission recently developed problems in that I could not shift (i) from N to D and (ii) from S to D, unless I row the gear stick about a bit. AB in Segambut adjusted the shift cable mechanism and (i) is no longer a problem. However, (ii) has not been completely eliminated - a detente/obstruction can be felt when I shift from S to D. AB Segambut suggested I replace the gearbox shifter cable mechanism which costs slightly more than RM2k for the price of the part alone. I declined on account of the cost.Has anyone faced the same problem and if so how can it be rectified?Thanks in advance.

Have not come across this before but before you embark on replacing parts, how about sending it to another mechanic to get a second opinion?

Tried to get 2nd opinion from AB Glenmarie and AB Sg Besi to no avail as they were fully booked.

Who else can I go to?
