I have a friend who is selling the following car:- BMW 116i- Year of Production: 2005- Year Imported: 2006- Mileage: 71,000 KM- Number of Previous Owners: 2 previous owners- Service Record: Yes- No modification- Interior: Very good- Exterior: Very good- Accidents: No accidentHe is asking for RM 90,000 for his 116i. I went on a test drive, and I like the feel of the car very much. Although 116i is criticised by many as being underpowered, I like the feel of the car. My concern is the holding cost of BMW. I have never owned any BMW so I am rather scared to take up my friend's offer. In projecting my financial cost, I have made the following assumptions. If I buy this car from him: 1) my expected annual average maintenance cost for the next 3 years is RM 3,500 per year. 2) my exit scenario is for me to sell off this 116i after 3 years, as the terms of loans for new potential buyer would becomes difficult after the car is more than 7 years old. I am targetting to do the milage click of additional 50,000 KM over the period of my 3 year ownership, then sell it off at the price of around RM 65K. This would mean that, if things go in accordance to my scenario, I am subject to bear the depreciation loss of RM 30,000 over a 3 year period. 3) i will take up the loan. i will bear the annual average interest charge of RM 3,000given 1,2,3 (or if 1,2,3 hold true), excluding the road tax & insurence, i am scheduled to incur the annual holding cost of RM 14,800 per year. Q1: Is my assumtion 1) realistic? Would it be higher or lower? Q2: Is my assumption 2) realistic? Would it be higher or lower? Q3: Should I be paying less money for this car? If so, what should be the target price? Thanks guys.

... err... i'm assuming u r an accountant? Would it be correct? :)

u forgot to add in the "soul"/emotional factor & value when u buy a car that don't make any economic sense

Hi Pion. I am not an accountant but I have much to learn from accountants, especially the principle of prudence :)

For anything that are being sold in the market, there are obviously some costs you bear. I am trying to face the financial reality before I buy a car. I do not want to end up in the situation of being forced to sell off some of other things that I own for the car I bought. That would be terrible. When I want 116i so much, the principle of prudence would keep me sane. :)

Interesting!

Answer for Q1: Depends on your luck. Have u been lucky or unlucky with cars?
Answer for Q2: Fair evaluation. Ever think of keeping the car and transplant with 3.5 TT?
Answer for Q3: No idea..

You do know that this is a piece of lousy investment ya?! You should be better of getting a Vios, why?!

1. Less than RM1k/year, that's slightly less than RM3 a day maintenance because 3 years warranty, excluding tyres, petrol and normal oil change.

2. You suffer a lot lesser than RM30k in depreciation in the first 3 years.

3. It a brand new 2009 car over your 4, coming to 5 year old BMW.

4. Your interest rate only 1.78% over compare to your 3.x%

5. Tyres are cheaper.

6. I think the predictability for a brand new warrantied Toyota is more suitable for u because, BMW sometime is very "naughty" and can upset your budget big time.

7. The feeling of a stock standard Satria NEO smoking u is not a very nice feeling when you are holding a BMW steering and it can be worse when the NEO cucuk u left right center.

My advice is buy the car and start shopping for a 135i engine.. I can assure you that you will be keeping the car even if you have to divorce your wife..

Hi astroboy, thanks a lot for your valuable & good opinion. Your assessment of BMW & Vios is right, and your points are absolutely irrefutable :)

I am tickled by your idea of getting a 135i engine, given your excellent points on Vios :) That is a kind of project that I would love to do when I have money & time ! If you are to put in 135i engine, would you need to replace the transmission of 116i to that of 135i ? And ECU? I guess you have to get a half cut of 135i and get the transmission system, a new set of shock absorbers, clutch, ECU etc. Wow, what an exciting project that would be.

I have a friend who has a Vios and I have borrowed his car several times in the past. The Vios is so well designed that I barely feel any stress driving around the city & highway. The boot space is big, easy power steering wheels, good visibility, good handling around the corners, low fuel consumption, air bags, enough space at the back of the car, easy to park and many more. The design of BMW 116i is something that I really love. The design of vios is not something that I could love but it is more than good enough.

Looking at the financial side of getting a Vios, given your comment, it appears that the annual holding cost of Vios is around RM 7,000 per year, with no "surprise shocks" on your wallet. On the other hand, the annual holding cost of BMW 116i would be around RM 15,000 and this comes with the "surprise shocks" that could make the annual holding cost as high as RM 20,000. Like you said, "it is a piece of lousy investment"!!! :)

Given your valuable advise, I have decided to get a Vios!!!!

Thanks a lot astroboy !!!!!!

Great choice! But I know deep inside your heart has a voice, "I'll be back!"

Most if not all of us, start off with non Euro marque, in fact I started off with a 1.5 Megavalve Saga, total loss, then found a nice Nissan red head CA16 twin cam engine, cousin to the CA18T Nissan 180SX engine, bought the engine, then only look for a Sentra, then E36 318i, then Kancil, then Perdana, then Wira, then Avanza, now E90...

Long and memorable journey, go explore and enjoy your journey!

... and remember your family member grows.. so different car for different stage of life is unavoidable. For me, next car will be a 2-seater..

The new Vios looks pretty good with the TRD bodykit.

This is the track car used in the Vios One make Race series in Thailand...

Vios Thailand don't play play, they have factory spec 1.5 turbo

I love this TRD bumper actually over the sharp tip Honda looked front lip, this blunt lower lip reminds me of "Days of Thunder" NASCAR bodykit.

Hi Astroyboy, yeah, you are right. - I am thinking " I will be back!! " or "I may be back!!!"

Very interesting journey you have taken! And I think its a well deserved E90 !!!!

A coupe is very nice. I have a coupe myself (TVR Chimaera). Its on sale !! :p

Fabien Yee, that Vios must be powerful!? Looks very fast !!!! :)

Now, i was just about to say something about why a 116i is better buy, but i guess the guy chose the vios instead. Well, id like to correct a statement.. I have a Neo, and I have a 116i.

If a Neo cucuks you, all you need to do is press the throttle. At 170km/h, the Neo will back off. If the Neo still persists, go 200km/h (reachable many times, just need a long road). See Neo fade away in rear view mirror. otherwise, test brake, let the neo slow down, exploit the campro's woeful torque curve and speed away.

116i handling is second to none. the Neo is fantastic, it can go around corners, but the 116i is just leaps and bounds ahead. im sorry to say.

BMW 1series?

Hi,you can findout many BMW and other cars in mudah.com:top:.BMW 1series is not powerful in highway and the car also can't speed powerfully than other BMW car model because last year i was tested my friends BMW1series speed at 130km/h with 4passangers including me at Senawang,A Perodua Myvi 1.3 can overtake us easily like a storm.haha we also feel shy on that time.:65:

Now he was sell his BMW1series and buy a BMW E90.From my opinion,if you are married,it is better if you bought 3series or 5series.5series is more expensive than 3series:eek: but you also must think about their maintainence cost because BMW is money car and always hungry of money:eating:,,haha:24:

Bro, is your friend's 1er a 116, 118, or 120?

I might be wrong, but if you ask Vios owners, i am pretty sure most would want to change to 1 series. And if you ask 1 series owner, i doubt anyone would want to change to Vios.

was being tail-gated by a vios trd along cheras-kajang highway @ 120kph yesterday evening. your's truly just floored his 120 and pulled away effortlessly, and vios suddenly looked so puny on the rear view mirror... :)

Yup agree with KK. Now that I have my trixie, I won't look at another japanese made car :) I love looking at those cars I leave behind from my rear view mirror and the handling is superb at corners. It's a driver's car :top:

I just lost a brand new Accord 2.4 (G8 Model) recently to some thieving bustards, stolen right from my house. Owned it for a mere 7-mths. It has 171HP, the drive was always uneventful. Switching over to 120i, the engine is well ahead of the 2.4 iVTEC, the roar inspiring, the drive engaging. 120i would probably pull off effortlessly if it's subjected to a traffic light drag race with Accord 2.4.

Accord's pros: Spaciousness, comfortable ride, uneventful (if that's a pro for u :) )
