US Dept of Transportation UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) ratings:

Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFTs -
Threadwear 140, Traction A, Temperature A

Michelin PS2 ZPs -
Threadwear 220, Traction AA, Temperature A

Double-A traction means the PS2 ZPs are up with the best of the sports performance tyres. A no-brainer why Energy likes them ;) Your next change, E46F? :)

while the traction is better....look at the threadwear 140 against 220...i guess the re050a is smooter/silent than that hard surface ps2?

The PS2 ZPs have same treadwear rating as the non RFT PS2s and they are known to be one of the most compliant and comfy ultra performance tyres. Actually 220 is pretty acceptable, and lower compared to GY GSD-3 and Toyo Proxies T1-R (~280 I think) in the same performance category. What this means is the RE050A RFT is very very soft on the treads and prone to accelerated wear. Sidewalls are still stiff due to its RFT functions.

I thought the wear rate on my ex RE050A was pretty good, not fantastic but quite acceptable. It lasted almost 2 and a half years!

..My tyre guy offered another reason: the valve sinks in so deep in a 0 pressure tyre that it doesn't activate the pump valve...

Alo! our valves are mounted on the rims la, not on the tube like bicycle which sinks in after full deflation..

Your tyre guy is :stupid:

:D :D :D

Anyway, happy tyre hunting.. all those tyres you guys shared above are all above my budget.. I will stick to my RFT for a good long while, with or without air.. :D

Dunno la. He also tried to fill it with his pump first and it didn't connect either. He removed the valve, pumped up the tyre and replaced it, and then it connected.

Anyway, I saw the buttons on the pump panel at my usual Shell. They're '-', '+', Flat & Unit. Thanks for the tip. :top:

Same here. 140 is very, very low threadwear rating, and I thought they would last less than a year. But I measured the thread depth myself yesterday, and still have 8mm in the fronts. Not bad...

I also thought 140 and yet only A traction? Yukk! But bear in mind that these ratings are done by the manufacturers themselves based on DOT guidelines, so it's more useful to compare ratings within a manufacturer's range than across manufacturers.

220 is a good balance between too soft and too hard. There are some that go above 400.

Hokay... No PS2 ZPs available from Michelin M'sia. Only normal PS2s at RM1,100.

So I'll be replacing one RE050A at RM1,850. 1 RFT tyre = 4 moderate price normal tyres. :(

Take a macro pic of the hole and post it here. We'll label it "The result of a screw which costed RM1,850" in our E9x hall of fame.

JPB: ur RFT lasted for 2.5 yrs????
Schwepps: U literally measured left 8mm thread left?

Hmmm i know my tyres r due soon.... should i ..should i not change

u shud change when the indicator is the same level with ur tyre thread.....coz if accident, the evaluator will check on that...if found u are driving with a bald tyre thread...they'll not cover u

Yes, Rachel, I literally measured the thread depth with a thread depth guage at my tyre shop. No guesswork involved, and I did the measurements myself. What's amazing is that the new tyre has a thread of 9mm. After 13 months of quite spirited driving, my fronts have 8mm left and rears have 6mm. So the wear rate on the RE050As is very good. Better than the 140 UTQG rating suggests. Maybe the Japanese are very honest with their ratings compared to the others...

My RM1,850 screw...

Big enough to poke a flat-head screwdriver through...

That slit is 2cm long. Whatever it was, punched through thick rubber, nylon, rayon and 3 steel bands!

wow....that's bad cut
btw, where u kena this again? which road for us to avoid? kaakakaka

Recently, I've only been in KL, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya, Rachel. Avoid driving in those 3 areas and you should be fine. Kaakakaka :D

Rachel, I've seen the remaining thread your front driver's side type - please change soon :listen: The only question is whether to change to RFT or non-RFT...

Schwepps: that is not going to help :( Hmmmm so u stay work in these area too *hint hint*

CK: What was the brand & model we were discussing the other day? Goodyear blah blah **what model**

oh wait, if i just need to change the front right...and if schwepps going to get new ones? can i then inherit his old tyres??
