Overheating!

Just thought of sharing with you all my experience this morning..

I went on a drive from Kota Kinabalu to a town called Keningau yesterday. Usually I would use my 4wd, but suddenly yest I drove my UDM. The journey was around 2 hours through hilly and mountain areas.

This morning, when I started my car and drove for only 3 mins, my Check Radiator Light came ON. But NO Overheating of the engine.

Then I stopped at my Site Office and opened my hood. Then I saw water coming out from my bleeder vent screw. So, when I touched the vent screw, then I noticed it was loose. A closer examination suddenly made me realized, my bleeder Vent Screw BROKE IN HALF !!!! One Half of it still stuck in the bleeder. :banghead:

Still being in the quiet town of Keningau, I had no choice but to ask a fren to go down to KK just to buy for me the bleeder Vent Screw that cost RM15. For a moment, I had a Love-Hate relationship with the car there. Just because of the bleeder screw, I was not able to drive the car and got stuck some more since I was in a small district that don't sell BMW parts. :102:

Anyway, got the part later in the evening. I torched a flat metal till burning red and placed it on the bleeder vent screw that was left in the bleeder hose to make a groove. Then, using a screwdriver I unscrewed the remaining part of the bleeder screw that was left in the bleeder hose.

The following pic shows the broken part of the bleeder screw. Top is my new bleeder vent screw, bottom is the screw which was broken in two with the lower part was the one left in the bleeder hose. Now I have an extra one in my car just in case of travelling next time.

Thanks for sharing. I guess this is why my mechanic gave me extra during last visit

Hi Petrus,

I was in the same scenario with my E36 328 many years ago on my way back from Ipoh. Yes, i got screwed just like the bleeder screw, towed the car from Tg Malim. Always had a spare since...

My advice is while at it, if you have not replaced your expansion tank, pls do so. This part also contributes to the bleeder screw failure. It causes extra/unstable pressure as it wears out, its a shame i didn't pay attention to it. Now i replace this part every 60,000kms. Mine broke at about 140,000kms :) There was also a significant feel of up in power, feels like its breathing better, smooth.

Bro thanks for sharing of your experience KK to KGAU trip with your UDM btw maybe u can ask the spare parts shop name Sin Sang Lee in future. Maybe this spare parts shop can help u to find, this shop was just opposite of Permata Club. The boss was botak head he..he...

yerps, with what happened, i think i might just get the expansion tank changed as part of my parts renewal program in the near future since i have already changed the radiator last year. Next will be water pump and hoses. Better be safe than sorry....

LOL... hey great story but like i've always believe bad luck comes without a warning... you dont expect to bring the whole spare part everywhere you go right? :p

Cheers on the good friends around

hahah... true...i guess in the end LUCK can come knocking on the door when u least expect it...

I guess this is common failure in E46s....I also had this experience before, happened on Sunday when the spare parts shops were closed and I was on my way to KL from Kuantan....luckily was only 20km from home....so drove and top up water twice to reach home and drove myvi instead.....Now I do have one spare in my car

sifus all,

my car had overheating probs
too many times happened until it stops overheat when the mechanic told that water had been mixed with oil
the situations that i experienced were

1. the temperature goes up from middle to red while in traffic jam/carpark basement. but after long shoot on the highway, the temperature went middle.
solution: changed the fan as the fan didn't has the 2nd speed.

2. same situation like above after changed the fan. happened seldom.
3. finally, overheat until red sign temperature with water popped out and bleed like hell

now my car is at workshop waiting to be done by mechanic
cost? like hell

i think we should have seminar on how to top up radiator water/bleed as i am not have the proper lesson laa

so glad to have this forum
tq

i've got same situation.. mechanic told me that my engine always overheat and need to do top overhaul check the engine condition n might to change the block n piston ring if bengkok yang cannot been skimmed :(
