KL security is getting very bad. I guess I would have to buy a ultra light laptop now and carry it everywhere I go.

What had this country becoming? Hard working citizen like us are the victims now.

But during festive season, all of them come out of the woodwork!!! Damn these people. How many crimes do they get resolved anyway?? Do we actually have any statistics? Sigh.

they got batt scanners now that can detect if you have a large lithium ion batt

inside the car.. the more powerful the signal, the bigger the batt.. so even if

you tint your car the theif will know.. the scanners can tell if it's a cell phone batt

or laptop batt..

NEVER LEAVE YOUR LAPTOP IN THE CAR UNLESS IT'S WITHIN VIEW..

Heard like that also. If I go out and do not need to use the notebook I'll take out the battery and bring with me. So far okay..

As far as I know the notebook battery detector is a myth. In UK, they are using bluetooth networks to find notebooks from what I read, but its kinda odd as well esp if the notebook is powered off.

The most common technique is that they tail you. Usually they wait outside buildings which have lots of office people leaving with notebooks (e.g. IBM tower, MAS Kelana Jaya etc), and tail you till you stop.

Hi Daan,
Sad to hear that someone stole your laptop. I have some questions though:
  • they smashed your passenger window but your laptop is in the trunk
    Yes
  • did you double lock your car using the key? if yes, then how could they have access to your trunk cause after double locking (after pressing the alarm remote, insert the car key to the keyhole on your door and turn it all the way till you hear another lock kicks in. it is like deadbolting your doors)
Sadly speaking, i did not double lock.
  • bmw trunk is quite safe unless they force it open
My advice:

  • Noted.
  • always put your laptop in the trunk BEFORE you start your journey, and not after you have parked your car at your destination
    Good idea

yeah, im pretty sure this battery detector thingy is a myth. In the first place, do u really think these petty thieves can afford to purchase a battery detector?

I guess the technique of tailing the targetted person is the most acceptable prediction. And yes, pls put your notebook in the trunk before u start your journey and not when u arrive at your destination.

I find such batt detector stories full of crap.

Bluetooth is OFF when you power off your notebook. So thats not plausible also.

Its as mentioned. Someone saw your put your notebook into your boot when you parked. Its like saying "look everyone, i've got a wad of RM1000 cash in my boot", come get it.

Here is the article on thieves using bluetooth to find notebooks in trunks. Sounds a bit off to me, but here is the interesting thing..

Most modern notebooks have a wake-on wireless LAN feature (WoWLAN). So, you could theoritically send a broadcast magic packet over WiFi to wake up notebooks in sleep mode and find them via bluetooth even when you have shutdown your notebook.. Theory only la.

most notebook got stolen because the owner didn't turn off the wi-fi or bluetooth.always turn off the wifi, bluetooth and if you can part off the battery from the laptop because no electron will be moving in/out the battery and the detector will not be able to detect it.

if ur'e creative enough put the laptop under the spare tyre:D

according to this article on zdnetasia, the police seem to think there is such a thing, but the only problem is, they have never been able to get their hands on one.

I also seem to think its urban legend as well. Sometimes, its also just pure luck on the thieves part. They hit your car, coz its a bmw, and in the hope there is something valuable in there.

another discussion on this on a blog.

Ehhhh... it was for all my hardwork begging my dad lah. There must be some credit for that. In actual fact, I'm very poor. Hahahaha!!!!!!

a friend of mine, a sarjan, said that detector thing really exist. Made in japan. cost around rm3k. The 'ciplak; thieves might not have the money to purchase one. But a big syndicate can.

sorry to hear that bro ....

my history, people smash my car window and took away alot of cash $$$. Happened in hari raya two years ago. Real sad.

we have to be smarter to be safer.

yalor. start by not leaving your laptop in your car lor. how many stories we have heard abt the same thing. why no one listening? :(

ah lian, people will learn when they fall. I'm sure some people not yet kena but heard thousand times still not believe. Their mind will only store " aiya, u unlucky than people smash your car lah. I park at shopping mall or bright place wont kena one."

myth or not about the detector, the safest way is not to leave ur laptop inside a car..at all. Not even if ur car is within sight becoz once they marked ur car, they will follow u home! My fren kena oredy, next thing he know in the morning was the boot's lock was broken and the laptop gone..and somemore no alarm!!
Ini semua kerja syndicate lah

better put james bond inside the story.

theCrow is right, it isn't that hard to just carry your laptop along for lunch, appointment, dinner, etc.

Worse still if its a company laptop, lost is one thing... but if your company wants you to pay back its at least another 3k out from your pocket on top of replacing your broken window or boot.

Fuad4, James bond car? electric charge your chassis and anyone touches your boot becomes an instant BBQ piece.

I'm sure the police can do something about all this, parking lots in shopping malls are usually installed with cameras these days. All they need to do is to get in touch with the mall and screen through it. The question is, do they even care if it isn't a murder or robbery...

The last time i lost my bike, they scolded me for reporting because it just add up to their stats of unsolved cases!
