Notebook in your car

Oh, sorry... there is two other things that matters most to them.

Speed Trap and Tangkap Basah!

Ermmm, I wonder if anyone has thought of a separate locked and immovable compartment in the car trunk. If potential thieves can read, they can be ward off by a car sticker etc so they won't even break your window knowing they can't get to your notebook. I better kopi-lite this idea!

Then the illiterate or those who dont read signs smash your window, crowbar your boot, find the heavy steel safe bolted on the chassis (a no-no if you want to go faster), get frustrated, smash all your glass, rip your dash, puncture all 4 donuts, key your paint job before walking away. No thanks. I'll just carry my lappy along for that short while. Besides you burn that few more calories too... (psychologically makes me feel better - haha). All the more reasons to get an ultralight, ultrasubcompact notebook instead of the heavy doitall-blurayed-mofo server-capable laptop.

What is the probability of the big lap top getting snatch while you walk vs putting at the trunk?

I think getting snatch is 10 times greater is our environment.

Theoretically, the thief cannot unlock and open the boot of BMW cars even if they smash your window. They being in the car and remote lock the car. You can't unlock from inside. My car window was smashed but they can't open the doors!

not sure about laptop being snatched while walking. I do think it's kinda heavy and big.. Chances of being stopped by a cop with a stolen laptop is higher too.. Not many ppl actually would ride a bike with a laptop in hand.

So has anyone heard of cases with snatched laptop???

Nope... but the laptop would make a good weapon to whack their heads....

most notebook got stolen because the owner didn't turn off the wi-fi or bluetooth.always turn off the wifi, bluetooth and if you can part off the battery from the laptop because no electron will be moving in/out the battery and the detector will not be able to detect it.

if ur'e creative enough put the laptop under the spare tyre:D

My notebook was a chap one, no wifi or bluetooth.

if you move alot with laptop it is best to get a backpack than a typical laptop bag.

Ya you are right about this. But I wonder if they can korek out the boot lock and force it open. My collegue who lost his notebook after leaving MAS Kelana Jaya to stop at Burger King SS2 for 10 mins came out to find the entire lock of his boot missing plus the laptop. He was driving a wira then.

Another collegue who took her lappy with her for dinner in Shrooms KLCC with a group of us had it placed next to her by her feet. No one saw anyone come by to take it but it was gone without anyone noticing it half way through dinner. Amazing!!

Problem with ultralight, subcompact notebooks is that the screen size is too small and your eyesight will go fast if you use it for daily work heh. I had one with a 12.1" widescreen sub 2kg notebook which I stared into for > 8 hrs per day and my eyes get so tired. I am back to 14.1" widescreen 2kg notebook and will probably live longer now.

Should make a big fuss against Shrooms. Its crazy man, i think people who dine there can definitely afford to buy their own laptops.

OK, now I'm totally screwed on what I'm supposed to do next. From the information i gather here,

1. Taking your notebook with you to dinner or pub may not be safe.
2. 1.5kg notebook maybe not be egronomically suitable.

Can we just get rid of all the thief? that would solve the whole problem.

Hi guys,

I'm an Electronics Engineer and specialised in survelience system.

I'm not sure if you guys seen the recent article about this in the newspaper, the so-called battery scanner is NOT true.

Everyone is assuming this (including the police) because it doesn't make sense how the thiefs know where you keep the laptop.

The standard MO (Modus Operandi) is these people will wait at most of these big MNCs, big four accounting firms and up-market location.

They will observe when you come out from work and tail your car until you stop. Then they will make their break-in.

Few preventive tips:

1.Do not put your laptop in LAPTOP bag, but put them into normal carry bag.

2. Tinted car window are harder to smash, so they will try to avoid those.

3. Dead-bolt your BMW's trunk.

Hope this help.

Talking about phones, my friend's phone got snatched while he was talking with it! Happened in Sunway Mentari outside McDonalds. I was supposed to meet him but when I reached he was already on the way to the police station to make a report. The culprits were riding a scooter and just snactched it from behind and sped off.

According to the police even one of their policeman got his phone snached while he was off duty and he was on his bike with is wife. Another bike came and snached it from his pouch!

Goes to show we are living in a dangerous society in Malaysia. Last week my friend's car got broken into while parked outside my house in PJ!

I was surprised how much safer Thailand is. Been there and had a few occasions where anyone could have taken my hp (left in a massage room & got returned by the cleaning lady) & credit card holder (dropped it inside a taxi and the taxi man came back to the hotel and passed it to the staff. The staff then passed it back to me with all the cards intact and unused.

Thailand is definitely safer bro. Even driving ethics are better although they have much more traffic. They're more polite and give way, not like here. Even South Africa with it's much publicise danger can be safer. I once dropped my credit card in a mall in Cape Town and a local came running after me to give it back.

Dont be clouded between the two. Being in a "safer" environment and having "honest" citizens are different. Unfortunately though, we seem to lack in both.
Over the years and from my travels Ive had both good and bad experiences. Here are a few:
- Jacket left in hotel in San Francisco. I only remembered it when in Boston the next day. Contacted the hotel and they fed-exed it over the following day.

- Been out the whole day and upon returning found that large full size luggage (check in Delsey) was stolen from hotel room (ground floor with glass sliding door broken in to) in Anaheim. The next morning, someone complained that her hand bag was stolen in the breakfast area in the same hotel, while she was taking her meal.

- Walking with a friend on The Strip in Vegas when his wallet was picked pocketed.

- Didnt feel at all threatened or unsafe taking the subway at 1am from the Bronz and Harlem.

- Friend (ex senior cop) got mugged just outside a five star hotel in Johannesburg

- Left h/p charger in the room in Havana, chambermaid brought it down to the lobby while I was checking out.

Ya you're right okow. 'Safe' and 'honest' are different, but unfortunately both are lacking here nowadays. I've never got back what I dropped here. PDA in a bank, unbrella in a mamak, handphone in Immigration Dept, wife's purse outside mini-market. A few minutes later you realise you dropped or left something, and nobody knows anything already. Very sad...

Have heard of this battery scanner since the late 90's but no one has seen one. It is easier to follow someone from an office building during lunch time or right after work especially on fridays and hope they get lucky instead of walking around with a scanner in a parking lot. Its more of a social engineering thing where you predict the pattern of an individual.

If you look at the most of the cases, most people who get their notebook stolen seem to have something in common - the area they work in.

Any electrical engineer can tell you that the emmitance given out by a notebook battery while it is switched off is very faint and if its in your car trunk, it will be even harder because its shielded by the metal(body). If such a scanner exists (which is technically possible) we would have seen people walking suspiciously from car to car holding a device close to the trunk)

Cheers
Chief
