Dear all,I recently got a short-shifter installed.I notice when engaged at 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear position, if I push gear stick either the right or left a bit, there's whining sound and there's also minor vibrating feel at the gear stick at the same time.Is this bad and immediate attention required? This is quite "position oriented". As I have the habit to leave my hand on the gear knob all the time, I have to readjust the stick, not too much to the left nor right, regularly, to avoid that whining sound.Your advise is much appreciated.Cheers.seewai

Perhaps transmission fluid is low, have you checked? Resting your hand on the lever might move the shifter rail just a bit closer to the gears within the gearbox and if oil not enough, that could explain the sound.

bro, what brand of short-shifter did u get? i think mine was original bmw short shifter..so far no noise after installed..

Bro thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out.

"Brandless" Made In Taiwan, imported from the USA.

Did you get your mechanic to have a look from under the car with the engine on?

Sounds like the linkage is touching something.

Yes that's what the mechanic recommended to me too, since the day he handed the car to me it's already shop-closing hour. Will update you all on findings.

Cheers.

Updates:
Mech checked under the car, running & idle, couldn't find anything touching and concluded it might just be song of the gearbox being channeled from underneath right up to the shift-stick.

Transmission fluid is OK too.

Bro Silverbullet, are you using a Z4 shifter? Is a Z4 shifter originally short-shifter? If it is I don't mind having it a go next time.

My clutch will need to be replaced soon also, as it's the clutch from conversion tranny set and did not change as mech said it could still run for a while and will replace once it gives way, without charging me labor.

Your short shift linkage is touching the long shaft . If is not too much then ask the mech to shave abit in the linkage part tht touching the long shaft . If is too much then you may need to change it back to the original . Or you may have some other ways to do it .

Bro, thanks for the tech info, could you recommend a workshop familiar with this, where this can be checked & rectified?

Cheers.

hi bro, I can't recall exactly what type is my short shifter..back then was told it's an original bmw short shifter and fits e46..i got it from calvin tan, at that time his shop called eurocarmotorsport in segambut..

After 2 mechs looking at it, both found absolutely nothing is touching anything, so the verdict is my ciplak short-shifter might not be doing its job 100% well.

Z3 1.9 shifter also no problem on my E34 with Getrag 220. Shifting feel won't be hard, just nice...
morpheus...where did you get z3 shifter?

You can get it brand new from Bavarian Auto. Need to order though usually takes about 2-3 weeks. Was RM220 2 years ago.

Bought when I went to Singapore last time, SGD70 excluded GST. Unlike previously I cant predict where is the gear position.

1 word to describe after changing: SYIOK!!!

Small update on usage of this after-market short-shifter.

I've been using this short-shifter for almost a year now (since March 2011), and living through 2.5L to 3.0L hearts, and so far not giving any problem.

I just found it a little difficult to shift from gear 2 to neutral position, have to do a soft "knock" from 8 o'clock towards 2 o'clock direction, to disengage it. Other shifting position I'm OK with them. Never had any wrong shifting so far. Only 1 count of trying to up-shift from 5th, (oops, 5 speed only hahaha) as engine already singing very high pitch.

Cheers.
