Here's what happened.Drove to Kuantan yesterday from my house in Ampang.I was going at about 130 only due to the winding road from Gombak toll and also because I was not familiar with the road and the sky was still dark.As soon as I entered the highway proper (Karak highway I think ) I went to 200 consistently and at times to 210 until I reached Maran. In fact I think I started at 6 am and reached Termeloh exit at 7.00 am - that's how fast.At Maran, I noticed that the car could not go to 190 and the car sounded rough - the exhaust sounded noisy. I looked into my mirrors and saw lots and lots of smoke - white smoke coming out at the back.I thought the exhaust has a hole resulting in loss of power and smoke. There was no warning lights at the dashport. So I slowed down to have a look but decided to continue at 80 and reached Kuantan whereby I called one of my panel workshop in Jalan Gambang. When the workshop inspected my car, he found that it was not the exhaust. The engine oil has almost disappeared so he poured in 4 litres. Lots of smoke continued to come up and a check at the radiator spare tank showed traces of oil.Took out the spark plugs and there was oil on every plug. Then he told me to expect the worse as he suspect that the gasket have given up and there is a leakage of oil into the exhaust and everywhere else.Since he is an motor accident workshop and not a specialist, he towed my car to a continental car specialist called Best Speed Car Care Service. There was a few BMWs there so I guess the place must be OK.Anyway, my engine was taken apart and the piston had a hole there, the heat had melted the aluminium. The piston ring has broken, and lots of other damages. The cyclinder head might have cracked but it is undergoing test now. Here's the estimate so far :1. Piston - RM 19002. Timing chain - RM 1053. Guide rail - RM 924. Tensioner rail - RM 2255. Cam shaft chain - RM 86 6. Guide rail - RM 837. vacuum hose x 3 - RM 368. Inlet valve x 2 - RM 1209. Ex valve x 2 - RM 15610. Oil pump chain - RM 8011. Con rod - RM 150 12. Top set gasket - RM 45013. Bottom set gasket - RM 25014. Main brg - RM 215 ( can't read the writing )15. Gasket sealant - RM 1816. to rebore block - RM 8417. to skim cyclinder head - RM 3818. charges on engine overhaul - RM 120019. Auto fluid - RM 2820. to test cyclinder head crack - RM 6021. knock sensor - RM 73022. ex sensor - RM 39023. breather connect - RM 4524. Crank sensor - RM 36025. Computer diagnosis - RM 8026. Oil filter - RM 3027. engine oil - RM 15028. Spark plug x 6 - RM 9029. Coolant - RM 2830. Radiator flush - RM 40So the total as at 6 pm tpday is just over RM 7k.If the cyclinder head is cracked and I will know by tomorrow, that will be another RM 3k plus.Checked out the cost of a secondhand engine with single vanos - RM 4500.So the question now is :1. should I overhaul my engine with new parts and thus have an almost new engine ? Otherthan this engine failure, my car is taken care of very well since I bought it 1 1/2 years ago and in fact I have spent RM 30k on it so far2. change to a second hand engine but same 2.5 litres. However I don't trust this option as I do not know the condition of a second hand engine - only 1 month warranty given.3. it will be difficult to find a 3 litre for E36 but I can get an M3 for about RM 15k but this will take time and it will cost a lot more to transplant.3. Anyone heard of this specialist in Kuantan ?4. Are the part prices reasonable ?Appreciate comments real soon as I have to make a decision tomorrow after I know the result of the cyclinder head.I took a flight back to KL just now so I will not be able to monitor the repairs but I will send an adjuster over if I need to.The pain now is unbearable .................... but going at over 200 consistently is ...... wow ....................

what 3 series model are you driving..?? please be specific :beaten:

E36 325 i think.....

i think better overhaul ur engine la.... like u have said, second hand engine who knows what will happen next.... maybe some undiagnosed problem inside.....

driving constantly at that ridiculous speed...i aint surprise dude...
i guess the slogans and all the advertising about speed kills don't apply or make any sense to you.
good luck!

it is a really straight piece of smooth road with almost no cars at all - almost like a track - but come to think of it, I do see your point now !

ouch....!!!

i won't trust a workshop that i'm not used to to do a major thing like that....i'd rather spend another 300 and tow it back to kl...that kinda money & extensive work...trust no one dude...

Ya Dude !!

Don't take a risk of sending your UDM to an unknown workshop !

They might sembelih you !!

Beware ... YOU MUST !!

better to hire a platform truck to transport the car back here for repair. If u were to repair there, it'll be an issue if there's minor hiccups after the repair work, will u drive back there to have to look at it????

Agreed.. tow ur car back here ...

Major works like that sure got some hiccup wan ..

cheers :D

Ozone, sorry to hear about your predicament. I do have a m50B25 (non vanos) engine for sale. You could still use back the existing vanos head unit from your current engine, camshaft and etc. I believe this is the cheapest option.

Rgds

I have spoken to a few people and the majority have said that it is best to change a secondhand engine, preferably one from Japan ( they tend to scrap it early ) as there are all kinds of risks for overhauling etc if the workmanship is not good. In fact the new pistons will have to be oversized.
I have found one from UK and one from Japan and both cost RM 4.5k and with proper AP.
So I have asked a Seremban workshop - Lai Hon Ming Workshop to arrange to send it to Kuantan tomorrow.
Thanks everyone.
Albundy - thanks but I might as well get a complete one.
BTW, there is another engine going for RM 2 k plus but without AP so if anyone interested let me know.

Sorry to hear that......as mention by others members here,i do agreed that u shld send ur car back to KL since u stay here.....Easy for u if anything go wrong after the major repair.....

Lai Hon Ming? I had bad experience with them when I had my Honda Accord fixed by them. They are located at Nilai. Just beware of their works.

BMWs are designed to cruise at "ridiculous" speeds on the autobahn where speeds are derestricted so it should be able to withstand "only" one hour of 200+ km/h.

It was a lot less than 1 hour at 200 - bear in mind that on MRR and Gombak toll area, I did a lot less than that due to darkness and windy roads. I am not a reckless driver .........
I think whilst I did up every part of my car nicely in the 1 1/2 years of ownership, I have not really touched the engine except repairing the vanos in addition to other usual maintenance items. But there was no need to touch it because it sounded OK and every time I see a mechanic I always asked him whether the engine sounded OK and he always said no problem.
I think the gasket is less than perfect and as such, one cannot hear any problems but the excessive hard pushing of the engine just made it give way without warning - just my theory.
Or maybe the engine just did not like my chaning to mineral oil from fully synthetic oil since 10,000 km ago.
Anyway, now I have some spare engine parts ( my old one ) which the workshop asked me to bring back and keep in case I need spare parts later on so if anyone needs any, feel free to let me know - but let me settle this problem first.
Can anyone confirm that the Japan engine is the same as what we get here ? I opted for that since I somehow believe that the mileage will be lower than a UK or Singapore engine as they tend to scrap cars earlier.

Lai Hon Ming just source the engine for me, not install for me. He is one of my company panel workshop so he should be OK. I work in a general insurance company and motor insurance is one of my portfolio and he knows that so he has been pretty helpful so far.

:D agreed..bimmers shud be able to do extended 200kph cruising without breaking a sweat, provided ur engine is in reasonably good condition.
anyways,good luck with ur transplant.

yup, the mineral was your mistake :beaten: :beaten:

the oil would 'burn' out at high RPM and the viscosity would have given in, hence your engine now kaput.
we use to run normal oil at the track using the sponsers oil.. we had a lot a problems to our engines...never were good..

now,sorry to hear about it..

so guys, never change to a mineral oil, if u are a high flyer. :nyehehe:

regards. :)
