The customs just got back for me, basically a 530i tax would be 193.15%, and 525i tax would be 171%.

They got their formula for calculating the import tax. They have a standard price of the car when new, and they apply 10% depreciaton each year plus some more if they feel like it. example: 2003 car, now 2010, so 70% depreciation, and then 10% off from that and if they like 10% more to get to the actual price you paid for the car (its a bit hit and miss)

BMW 530i M-Sport c.c 2979 tahun 2003 Harga Pound 27,258.00

- 15% 23,169

- 70% susutnilai 6,950.79
- 10% 6,255.71
- 10% 5,630.14

x 5.5708 ex rate RM 31,364.38
+ Insurance 1.5% 470.47
+ Tambang 1,700.00
Jumlah RM 33,534.85

x Kadar cukai 193.15% RM 64,772.56 (import tax)

thats a very rough quotation apparently, they have to look at the condition of the car and other factors.

There's also appeals, and its sometimes quite substantial saving over original sum. my friend got 37.5% off from his original tax quote.

I guess I'll have to go for a 2002 to get further 10% off.

Jumlah RM 33,534.85

x Kadar cukai 193.15% RM 64,772.56 (import tax)

for a 2003 is way way cheaper than to find one alike over here.

Nope its 9 months, but now im about 3 months short because I'll probably go back in August. Common practice is buy a car from private owner, and ask them to back date the purchase date to allow 9 months ownership on the logbook (you can declare transfer name date here)

I know a number of friends who bought cars 2 weeks, a week and even 3 days from their return to Malaysia and they got it all settled. Malaysia Boleh.

I think thats way too high, as my estimate is to pay in the region of low 30k after appeals. Keeping my fingers crossed, as I'm at the mercy of the customs.

I was the victim of a major shouting event yesterday though, some customs officer shouted at me through the phone, telling me off for calling her and asking her all these questions. She said its not her job to entertain calls from everyone all over the world asking questions. Not helpful at all. She probably got PMS this morning, or had a bad night. Talk about customer service. Lived in the UK for 7 years and I was never told off by anyone at all, let alone shouting. Better get used to this now.

Then tried another officer in the same department who offered me the above information. Very polite and all. Hope there's more people like this in Malaysia

Then what is she for?! Darn!

she said that my job is just to buy the car and declare it. no need to ask questions. and her job is only to value the car after i declare it. which, if i rely on her i would be in the shit since the tax is so high. I was being very polite, assalamualaikum puan, selamat pagi puan, boleh saya tumpang bertanya, and ended up being shouted at.

Did you pu ki ma her at the end of the phone conversation?

next time, take down the name and position of the person and lodge a complaint to the Public Complaints Bureau under the PM's office. The people there respond and take action very quickly

i thought of the same...but she would even bother giving you her name and position? she would just hang up the phone...

I got her name coz I looked up the customs directory to call specific officers that looked after the stuff. if i see the DO NOT CALL THIS BITCH sign next to her name I wouldnt call.

Well I would do that but I'll put myself in jeorpardy. Come the time I'll be bringing my car I'm at their mercy to give the import tax quotation. Given the history (will be bad blood running) most likely all the appeals wont be accepted so I'm on the lose.

Plus this is not just some old makcik kaunter pertanyaan, her title is Penolong Pengarah Kastam. She'll likely have a lot of friends in there.

true...sometimes, we're at the mercy of such arrogant ppl. Regardless how bad you wanna F the person up, you gotta still play nice and polite! Happens....

penolong pengarah je....

Yea usually the front desks, assistants, penolong kanan la, penolong kiri la, checkout counter in hypermarket and all the lower tier positions only will show their face and colours! I could not agree more by saying that. I've experienced it myself. The second you say "what's your name and what's your boss's name and i want to see him now" their face change!

The same goes for call centre/ credit card/ banks customer service. You'd be surprise just how rude some are born to be!

I have bought my E39. Its a 530i M-Sport Individual Aegean Blue Edition. First registered 06/2003. Porcelain Nappa leather sports seats (looks like off white/light grey). Harman Kardon speakers. M-Parallel staggered wheels and sat nav/TV.

NICE! NICE! CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW ACQUIRE! :top: :top: 2003 FINAL BATCH sommore :top:

When can see the pics pics pics ?? :) Aegean Blue is a rare colour (but looks nice) over here...probably you'll be the only one driving one here! :)

like the M pars very much...

You can see the car here:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...26b2a01a080007/sort/priceasc/page/1&logcode=p

But the car is actually darker than shown in the pictures.

Managed to get the price down to £5300 and a new set of key. The one given with the car is quite tired, with the BMW emblem in the middle gone. I will order an extra one myself, apparently cost £70 each.

The car salesman was quite hesitant to give further discount because it has been reduced quite a lot, I think it was first advertised at £6495, then went down to £5995 and the latest at £5495.

I know the mileage is quite high to most of you, but for the price I'm not going to quibble. A 60k miles car (sometimes not even a Special Edition car) is normally around £8000. Most of the car here around the same age is around 100k miles mileage, so this is just over that.

All that aside, when I saw the car I fell in love. Thats all that matters. Those staggered wheels....

haywire, thanks.
let me know when the car arrives so that I can pick it up :p

congrats... lucky bugger... bought car much cheaper than we blokes in malaysia...
