That is the normal m-sport steering, same as the one in E46. But it wont be long in my car as the SMG steering should arrive tomorow! Will install straight away.

oh there's another type of m-sport steering, the older one which have a bigger airbag centre. this one is a later version, i think post 2002.

DIY SMG steering wheel retrofit DONE!!!!

Not that hard to do, I had my car for less than a week and I know where things go. Bit hard trying to pop out the airbag though, but once you know where to push its easy as hell.

The feeling of changing your gear on the steering is priceless! Definitely recommended if you want to feel the potential of the car (have to be noted that this is nothing different than changing your gear up and down with the shifter, but on the steering its so much easier!)

Pics as below

The new steering wheel. Love the feeling of the soft and supple grip of the new leather

DEFINITELY LOVING IT!!!!!!

wow...bro...that's a lot meatier to look at, feel it and hold onto.:top:

How much did you fork out for this retrofit kit?

Anybody have a mkIV sat nav dvd for malaysia? I will need one when i go back..is this available? can copy or not? have to get original? (RM2000++)

Bought it from a guy on ebay, but did the transaction off ebay to save cost on both side. He's from USA.

eBay price: $745 for steering, $225 for retrofit kit (this include the slip ring switch and the wiring) and $49 for postage.

Price off ebay: $699 for steering, $199 for retrofit kit and same for postage.

As he did the transaction off ebay he could declare the value of the item as $85, to minimise import tax. If you buy it from him on ebay he would have to declare actual price (nearly $1000, imagine the difference in import tax).

Fitting instruction included but quite hazy. He only points out where things should go without telling you how to get there. But there's plenty of information on the net on how to release the airbag, how to remove the steering wheel and so on. Once you have all this info at hand its quite easy to do and straightforward. Plug and Play. If you dont like it the process can be reversed without any trace on your car. Same procedure on E46 as its the same wheel.

Hi Haywire,

Absolutely loved your new steering wheel and your car's interior!
Really mouth watering!

Anybody here knows where to get this steering wheel in Malaysia for E39 and how much would it cost?

Cheers.
Neoh

yup, mine's m-sport with the bigger airbag. this steering is much nicer. Thicker too.... great for grip

BTW airbag NOT included. Only works on Steptronic post 1999.

is the SMG 'M' thicker than your previous one (1st pic)? It certainly looks thicker, or just the new leather is fooling my eyes

haywire, mind sharing the ebay seller's name?

His username is keshav246. not sure how many more does he have. Seem like a bmw parts seller though.

Btw it is thicker than the original steering, but I think the original steering was much thicker when new (probably the same as this new one) because it was a M-Sport wheel as well, but got thin with the pressure from the hand through the age. The new leather is really soft and easier to grip, melekat to your hands la.

you mean sticky like glue ah bro due to leather deterioration over time or is it memang like that?

lor not like that la, its melekat in a good way. I mean if old steering, it becomes a bit shiny with age, like it was polished and when you're cornering you have to grip the steering tight otherwise it'll slip. New leather its soft and still have its patterns/grains so better grip. when cornering just put your hand on the steering, dont need a strong grip.

I think I'll start another thread in the showroom section for my car, detailing everything I have and will do to the car. This includes installing a retrofit 3.5mm Aux In for mp3 players (original BMW) and installing a xenon angeleyes headlamp. Will do it in the weekend if I have time.

After all, I'm not looking for a car anymore!
