Yesterday I was browsing through the displays at the car lighting section at Eunos (1-Utama) and I noticed that besides the HIDs, there are also many light bulbs that look like the HIDs but at a fraction of the cost. They go from about RM50 per pair to about RM400 and they looked like the plug-and-play type. Now I am confused of all these lighting options and is hoping if you experts out there could "throw some light" (figuratively speaking) on this. Many thanks.

dude...these after market lights r usually good for a couple of months and then ur in the dark
its better to just get hid.
i used to use the mega watt bulbs too but they frequently blew on me.
best bet is to ask kevster or tom and they will info u the right way.

tyke.... thanks for pointing out the "unauspicious" number of my posting. (hahahahah) hopefully I am not too late.

So you reckon those aftermarket bulbs doesn't last and a complete waste of money?

C-Square,
Yup... agree. Most of those cost lowly, but they perform badly too, u get what u pay for.

Also, look out for the bulb ratings on them. They can burn out yr reflectors first before they burn themselves out, i know.

So, get it done properly.

Tyke,
U so free to post yr replies today ka?? Sampai looking at other ppl's posts??

Most of us would kinda hesitate on spending a lot of money especially on lighting if there's a cheaper alternative. Majority of the manufacturers coat their bulbs with a coating of blue which acts as a filter to make the light appear whiter or even blue when they're turned on. High wattage HID look alike halogen bulbs that is rated above the average 55Watts will most likely do the following:-

1) burn out on you in no time.
2) melt your wiring harness/headlight plugs, headlight lens especially plastic ones, and in some cases reflectors.
3) coating on the bulb may peel off and cause color difference between the headlights.

The HID market nowadays is flooded with tons of aftermarket kits so make sure you do some research before investing in a set. Here's a word of advice. Purchase a kit from a reputable manufacturer and it will last you years...trouble free.
:)

YOU DO THE MATH

Cheapo trendy bulbs always burn out (short lifespan) RM 10 - RM 80/pr

Premuim trendy bulbs aren't cheap (and still burnout!) RM 100 - RM 300/pr

HIDs are expensive....*sigh* RM 1k - RM 4k/set

Get a pair of cheapo ones and change them twice = should have bought the premuim brands

Get a pair of premuim ones and change them twice = you're pretty close to a set of HIDs

Get a set of HIDs and the ballast or bulbs blow = drive in daylight only as got no more money in the bank and have been disowned by family due to idiotic fetish over bulbs

kevster30 : ha ha .. perfectly explaiend!

c_square : actually the halogens on a E46 is pretty good!! I'm quite satisfied with it,.. lights up much better then the E34 lights.

The design on the E46 normal lights are decent.. simple bulb and a large reflector.

Don't buy the fancy bulbs .. it makes the car look non OEM, and simply doesn't light up any better.

Go for the real HID .. or get clear corner lights to freshen up the looks.

fuiyoooo.......thats like some sort of mathematical equation lah....tried to disprove it but cant seem to....I'd say it stands until sum bugger design light which is cheap and actaully lasts :).......

Im on standard (non-smiley) lamps BTW.....kinda weak but it works.....

since we are on the topic :) (also read as...racun coming)......

what about osram silverstars?...does anybody know how much where and whether they are plug and play i.e. just swap the bulbs...osso are they reliable?

OS(H1) costs abt 40 from PH Auto, PJ. I've been using it for the past 6 months and it's still good. It is brighter than the stock yellow but that's abt it. And yeah..it is pnp.
