Hi to allI owned a 2003 E39 520i and am thinking of exchanging it for a E39 525i when I saw this in Mudah: http://www.mudah.my/BMW+525i+A+-23303919.htmIs the price too good or is it reasonable, considering it has such low mileage? Or is this an indication that there are major issues such that it is not worthwhile pursuing?I would appreciate any information on the car's history. If I were to acquire one (not necessary the one above), which workshop would one recommend where I can send it to for the most proper and thorough inspection, followed by all needed repairs and parts replacements etc etc, esp. of the engine and other essentials (sorry, I can't be specific as my technical knowledge on cars is minimal:- the more reason I need a reliable and honest workshop) - in KL/PJ or even better in Penang. I have read that there are many issues with E39s and I would like them resolved from the start so that I can have as many years of hassle-free or minimal-hassled driving as possible. Thanks a million.

Hi niche,

First, never trust 2nd hand car dealer millage. 99.99% of second hand car dealer "tune" the millage as low as possible ... my old car trade in with 300k millage and now it shows in mudah 80k millage only.

Secondly, even you check at the point of time nothing is wrong with your vehicle, it doesn't means that they won't change the part after you confirm booking (usually happens to recon car with good condition).

Lastly, if your existing 520i is in good condition, why do you change it to a car which you do not know what's happening with it?

Anyway ... above is personal opinion only, you might be lucky to meet some a bit kind heart dealer out there ...

Niche,
U already own 2003 520i.. it was the last batch of e39.. I believe your car is in very good condition. why do u have to swap to 525i?.. if u want to have the 'kick' of 2.5 or 3.0 just swap the engine.. u can preserve the 'very good condition ' car u have. Buying a second hand car is no guarantee u will get a good car.. its more like 'luck'. ( just a view). ;)

Thanks Jeffrey and antiquer for advice.

Current 520i drives well but has issues, the most pressing being the engine consuming engine oil - I need to top-up total of about 2 L every 5000 km .

There are also other things like windscreen water-pump failure, aircond odour, parking sensors failures, all of which I am willing to fix. Also I'll like to make the headlights brighter and get the missing instrument cluster pixels repaired.

Since I am going to do all these, I was thinking - why not get another "good" car, more powerful engine and do the same to it instead of the current 520i.

If I am not successful in looking for a 525i, I will go ahead with my original plans for my 520i, but would appreciate recommendations re workshops. Pixels and headlight - I plan to consult experts on this forum like haywire and yazmeen.

Cheers.

you can check if the mileage is genuine using the scanner. i once replaced my cluster and i did change the mileage on the cluster to follow as it was before. you can use the same scanner to check if there are other stored troublecodes as well.

Register 2002.. Most likely manufactured prior 1999, which means M52àB25.. U know the difference? Not responsive, high fuel consumption, no power.

Well sometimes lucks play abig role here...
Mine E39 525i 1999 register 2004...
M52TU25 got lot o power n very good fc huhu...

aku ada stereng lori dan bas......kau ada....

Bro, your current issues with 520i wont cost you more than 10K, most are compulsory maintenance.

Like what everyone has said, getting a used 525 is not your hard earn money, you may end up paying more as E39 is not a new car anymore. Should you be able to find a tip top unit like vixx's baby it will not be cheap.

Thanks very much everyone for much needed advice.

I will steer away from that Mudah car. Will call number given by alantiong and see what transpires after that.

Meanwhile, any suggestion of workshops to fully do up an E39 - competent and importantly honest; don't mind if a little slow or expensive, is most welcome. Preferably in Penang but don't mind KL /PJ if highly recommended by forumners.
