What i understand is the idrive is compatible with iphone 3gs onwards to iphone 5. But to get full use you'll need to have at least ios 6.0 installed.

Previously i had ios 5.1.1 and i couldn't get the email and sms functions to work.

Only worked once i upgraded to ios 6.0.1

i using both iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, unable to show SMS and emails also :(

I followed exactly the steps i posted from another forum earlier and after i unpaired and paired my phone again it suddenly worked

Yup. My 4S and IOS 6.0.1 has that. I set all to 'On'.

I just found out and managed to get the BMW Live (RSS, Weather), Teleservice and Internet working from the ConnectedDrive section in iDrive menu. Just need to turn on your 'Personal Hotspot' on before u start the car, so when Bluetooth connects, it connects with the internet from your phone straight.

But I guess iPhone 3GS and 4 still has limited functions, even after the IOS 6.0 upgrade.

read somewhere that bmw is a bit behind in keeping up with Apple churning out new software and updates. You'll be safe if you're using a blackberry though as most of the functions should work straight away

The quick and easy way to get this set up on your car is to do the following:
  • Upgrade your phone to iOS 6
  • If you have paired your phone previous, remove the pairing from your phone and the iDrive system just to start fresh.
  • In iDrive go to Telephone -> Bluetooth -> Your Phone and the push the iDrive controller to the right to get to the main configuration screen
  • Scroll down to Configure Bluetooth and make sure that the check box for "Office" is checked
  • On your iPhone, go to Settings -> Bluetooth -> Your BMW and touch the blue arrow to go to the settings. Make sure that the Show Notifications slider is set to "ON"
  • On your iPhone, go to Settings -> Notifications -> Messages. Make sure the following sections are "ON": Notification Center, Show Preview and View in Lock Screen. We also changed the alert style to Alerts in this section.
  • After getting it all set up and testing by letting the phone lock itself (not pushing the lock button) and sending a text message from another device, it still did not work for us initially. This is the part about shutting off the car and walking away for at least 5 or 10 minutes. Maybe there is a bug that needs the connection to be severed and re-connected to make things work. It is sort of a mystery right now. After coming back and having a message sent the system worked and the notifications came through to the iDrive and were read aloud by the car.

Not sure it's becoz of the re-pair of phone but I'm now able to receive emails, SMS, whatsapp and even line. Only trick is after reconnecting. I've to change the number of notifications lines to remind the phone that it's connected to the car... Only then emails and whatsapp come out.
