Interested to buy a used 2011 BMW, price is good, but what are the pointers to check for used car? The mileage is low, only 70k, but how we can be sure of engine or transmission quality? Would a call to Bavaria with chassis or plate number would be sufficient to know the car history? Sorry, I m new to bimmer group, just want to make sure best used car I could get, but the outlook already superb

I will do the following if I were you...

1. Get the VIN number.
2. Log on to http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html to check the car specs, YOM and etc by key in the last 7 digits of the complete VIN number.
3. Check the details of the service booklet at the trunk.
4. Get the car reg. no. and call to the respective authorised dealer to check if the car still under BSRI (3 years or 5 years).
5. Send the car preferably to the SC that has the car service history for inspection. Usually you will be charged about RM200-300. Join the mechanic to 'listen' if the timing chain is good. Search YouTube for N47D20 timing chain and you can get lots of useful information.
6. Check the price for those parts listed in the service report. If those parts are not covered under BSRI and it is due for replacement, you may try to nego a better price with the 2nd car dealer.
7. Get second opinion from competent BMW workshop and do an inspection again. They will usually drive the car around to check if the gearbox is ok. But it is purely based on their experience. No 100% guarantee.

Usually the car dealer will ask for deposit before sending the car to the designated SC.

If you decided to make the purchase, next thing to do is to replace gearbox lubricant and oil pan, even they say it is for life time. Don't flush the gearbox. Some fellow forumer said problems might surface after flush. If you worried your BSRI void, then you can choose to change after 100kms. But I don't think they will know as long as you use genuine oil pan.

My 2 cents.

It's 2011, doubt it Covered still under BSRI. But thanks, will do call up BMW folks n check. But checking vehicle wise, it's tougher becoz I m not around KL, but sure do will send to Bavaria for check up once deposit paid. The company did promise to refund if huge problems found, might not easy once the money is in their pocket, but worth the risk? Any good BMW mechanic ard belakong cheras jaya to intro?

I think also get one of the 320d boys to have a look and drive car a bit. We know from driving our cars around the last 4 to 5 years what a 320d should feel n move along like.

oledi decide to bought one. :p can't wait to start driving... ~!!! i hv requested a full safety check at BMW from Dealer, after few negotiation, finally allowed, why not? isn't that consumer rights to test and check before we paid for the car? i wonder why they kept declining at the 1st place.... all i m asking is, the engine and transmission still in good shape.. others wear and tear is bearable..

hope for the best ~!

just pray hard for good transmission and engine... really can't hope for my 1st trial on BMW brand car .. :p

The 320d is gaining more n more popularity now; combining its torque + economical FC + practicality almost an all-rounder car...congrats on your purchase bro...don't worry I heard the 320d engine and transmission is very robust...just enjoy the ride and the new found excitement!
