old skool e30 had pumps outside of the tank, these motors were more robust, but still had the tendency to fail, but the famous buzzing will be heard out loud before it kaputs
newer pumps were inside the tank, these pumps were also prone to failure due to another reason- and its not being not submerged in the fuel, its the extended tank pressure that has detrimental effects on the internal parts of the pump, another reason it last abit longer is because you don't hear it buzzing as it is soaked in the petrol, which makes it worst as you don't know when its gonna fail
there is a theory when the pump fails, a high jolted for a short time with enough electricity, it will go on till a drop in current......just a theory.....nnot proven yet
