Hi All;This is going to be my first month using BMW car and it teaches me how really i need to be a BMW enthusiast before can starts using a car with BMW badge since it is not just as easy as using a normal Japanese car. Here was the scenario:Was driving on PLUS Highway heading back to Ipoh and felt the car was underpowered and reluctant to increase its speed. Then floored the throttle and gear is engaged to lower gear, and then suddenly heard knocking sound from the engine and slowly revs slow down and finally engine shut down.Tried to crank the engine again but not manage to.BTW my temperature indicator is faulty but i did refill the radiator water before starts the journeyWhen the car is cooling down i opened the radiator cap looks like the the water level was decrease.Tow the car directly to workshop claims need to do top overhaul that cost 2.8k after they done the checking. My questions:1) Is it true that if the temperature went high the car will suddenly stopped?Since i'm also suspecting its might due to the alternator. 2) Or is there like cut off on the ECU to shut down the engine if the temperature goes high?3) Is it true that it will cost you RM2.8k to do top overhaul?4) If the cylinder head is being skimmed ( going to be 2nd time) is it still safe to use thicker gasket to cover the clearance between valves and the piston? Since might be the calculation of the compression will not going to be accurate anymore or might be I need to change the whole cylinder head it self?Dear forummers, your comments is really appreciateble TQ

Tow the car directly to workshop claims need to do top overhaul that cost 2.8k after they done the checking.

My questions:
1) Is it true that if the temperature went high the car will suddenly stopped?Since i'm also suspecting its might due to the alternator.
No, nothing to do with alternator when you experience over heating. Your engine overheating problem is due to loss of coolant in the radiator. Even though you have filled the radiator, it does not mean that there is water. when there is a leak, the water loss can be sudden. Your engine will overheat. This will caused your gasket to be "blown" and loss of compression. Engine power will be "reduced" and finally the engine will stalled.

2) Or is there like cut off on the ECU to shut down the engine if the temperature goes high?
ECU does not cut out the engine when temperature goes to the red zone. The Temperature indicator will tell the driver what to do. It very unfortunate that the meter is not working. This is the most important thing to have.

3) Is it true that it will cost you RM2.8k to do top overhaul?
This seem to be the going price.

4) If the cylinder head is being skimmed ( going to be 2nd time) is it still safe to use thicker gasket to cover the clearance between valves and the piston? Since might be the calculation of the compression will not going to be accurate anymore or might be I need to change the whole cylinder head it self?
If it going to the 2nd time, better change engine lar. Engine is about 1.2K to 1.8K depends on condition. With labour cost, it will be around 2.8K. New heart is always better.

sad thing to happen, but sometimes, reality smacks you rite in the face..calls for an upgrade bro..experienced that knocking sound u mentioned..
btw, haven't been getting enough sleep eh? 4.07 am u posted this??

- yes i do agree it doesnt relates to each other between alternator and overheating but i was thinking alternator might be one of the possiblities.

- oic; ECU wont cut off, bcos i heard a story from a BMW user this symptoms of cut off can be happen to BMW car

- agree with u.. swap with a new engine will make the car breathe better..but since i was from a background of Japanese car i will rather go for RB or 1jz since if i topup a bit i can sattle the underpower problems of 318. And somemore i felt RM2.8k for replacing the stock engine or do top overhaul, its not worth it..It will be a different story if i manage to do the top oerhaul that will cost me lesser than 1.5k, i will rebuilt back the engine..and i feels that 2.8k is really a lot of money whereby my previous car, Levin 4AGE engine lantai only cost below than rm600..maybe i'm too young and unmatured to play BMW yet since i feels that the price gap between Japan and Continental car is really big.. :20:

So as a conclusion; definately either swapping the engine/ top overhaul need to be done, is there any 318 engine for sale?

yup..lucky i still have my trustworthy KE70 to go to work ;)

ECU will cut out the engine if the crankshaft sensor fail. It will disable the firing (spark ignition) and fuel pump as a fail safe mode.

engine overhead, stalls, unable to restart hmmmmmm sounds like piston cease...

In the future, make sure your temperature gauge is working, it is one of the most important gauges you have. Lets hope rm2.8K going to help.
