Hello all sifus, Recently my engine was leaking coolant from the cylinder head gasket. No overheating problem here, just coolant leaking. My mechanic advise to do a top overhaul and he insist to skim the cylinder head. From what i understand, if the cylinder head is warp due to overheating only then skimming the cylinder head is neccessary. Does anyone know what is the allowed tolerance to skim the head? Is there any negative effect after skimming the head? Will there be any overheating problem since the compression ratio will be higher and more heat will be produce? Hope someone can clarify. thank you.:listen:

Skimming is the option when the cylinder head is warped. Usually after skimming is performed, slightly thicker gasket can be ordered to compensate for the loss due to metal removal.

If you dont have any overheating, you basically do not need to skimmed. Warping is caused not by overheating alone.

It is caused by overheating and trying to add cold water when the engine is still very hot.

Overheating might also cause your gasket to blow.

How can the compression ratio be changing when the stroke and bore of your piston remained unchanged?

However, like everything used, top overhaul will never get your engine to be as good as new.

Bro Jarance,
After skimming, the space above the piston at TDC will be slightly less , hence the compression ratio will be increase. Correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers,:)

No lah. there is a limit on how much you can smimmed. Normally a few "thou" (0.001) of an inch.

This is compensated by using thicker gasket..

Skimming cylinder head

O.K lah. So in that case there won't be overheating problem. That is my only concern. Agreed that it won't be good as new, just restore to the condition before the leak happen will be good enough. Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers!

higher compression ratio was better efficientcy,
how ever it reduce some cubic centimeter slightly, not very much differ.
it should improve

what do you mean overheat?, the temperature gauge in IKE reach Red light?
or just normal temperature heat?

what type of gasket did you use?, platinum?, PAPER?, CARBON?, COPPER?

USE the PLATINUM metal gasket.

radiator leak?,
replace the radiator with FULL aluminium alloy radiator and
aluminium expansion tank, hi-performanch stainless steel water pump,
silicone radiator hose, aluminum thermostate housing cover,
lubrication oil cooler...

i can help you guys/lady to get those part,
i am sure it is very hard to get from local bmw spare parts shop.

just contact me...

spend the money $$$$$ at ONCE, IT will last for very long time.

Hey,after the top overhaul, power is also much much better. Now I just have to give the accelerator a quick press and I get a kick down like response. Before this I get a response like this only when I press the accelerator pedal to the floor and hit the kick down switch. But still
I guess it won't be as good as new as bro Jarance said. Just sharing here.:listen:

Hi VNP, do you mind sharing the parts changed during the top overhaul and cost involved? Also the type of ride you are using. Besides losing coolant, did you also notice a drop in engine oil level?
