Hi all,I started a thread more than 1 year ago when I was deciding to get either a 323i or 320d. Thinking punya thinking last2 didnt buy anything last year.. and I'm glad I did not..This year they throw in iDrive for 320d and add more HP. Finally decided on 320d! I actually got the car early last week and done almost 900km in a week!At first I was having mixed feelings about the 320d.. on one hand, very powerful engine and good handling with the M-Sport. On the other hand, the diesel sound at low RPM / low speed...well, you know... As it turns out, I was quite bothered by the diesel sound.. Today I sent my car for them to fix something on the windscreen and got a courtesy car - a 320i SE. I've driven the 320i for quite a bit just now... After that I come to appreciate my 320d more.. ALOT more :) maybe after this I wont mind the diesel sound anymore.. I wish they could have given me a 323i or 325i then I could make a more meaningful comparison.. but for now, I couldn't wait to get my 320d back... 320d owners out there, did you guys do any extra soundproofing on the car? Or you guys just love the diesel sound? hehehe..

I love the sound..everything about it! especialy the turbine whine/purr....listen for it when you rev the engine!

Can hardly hear the sound in the cabin unless you rev above 2.5k rpm. The sound proofing is quite good actually. It should give you pure aural pleasure only duing spirited drive.

I have gotten all the courtesy SKD 3-series cars they can offer, 320i, 320d, 323i, 325i M-Sport. The punchiness of the 320d is above and beyond any of the petrol cars including the 325i. The difference is quite clear since I literally drove them back to back.

After driving the 323i I couldn't believe how hard core (IMO) the suspension was on the 320d M-Sport, the 323i was quite comfortable by most standards. However I hated the skinny steering wheel.

After driving the 325i I marvelled at how much torque 380Nm is by comparison. Accelerating uphill on Karak was a breeze that the 325i simply couldn't match despite the lovely sound of the inline-6.

I'm not bothered by the clatter because it's only there at idle. Anything above idle and I can't really tell it's a diesel aside from the fact that it goes faster with so little drama and noise.

bro gameover, I can definitely relate to some of the facts you brought up:
1. normal suspension compared to M-Sport. Totally different and I like the m-sport suspension better. on the 320i, I was bouncing on the highway like mad.. of course the road is to blame also but the same on m-sport feels better..
2. i also hate the skinny steering wheel
3. i can hear the sound only during idle or low rpm only. on the highway it is gone and definitely "go faster with so little drama and noise"..

yet to see how 325i perform though.. maybe one day I just arrange for a test drive on 325i just to feel the difference...

is there any kit out there that can make the clatter sound less noticeable on idle or low rpm? maybe i just need to get used to it..

I think we should just forget about the clatter and get on with the driving....

congrats on your 320d bro.a year is a long wait.
but it is worth it isn't it?
hope to see u in any upcoming events/drive.

cheers.

i can't see what the 323i's selling point is right now, other than a more comfortable ride suspension and an additional 2 engine pistons. but for RM17k more???
idrive was the one major component the 320d did not have before, but since the beginning of this year all 320ds get it as well.

wz3k, congrats on your choice and enjoy the ride! the diesel clatter is the sound of a few thousand explosions each minute in your engine, churning out the huge road eating torque that we all love and relish whenever we get behind the wheel.

thanks a lot for your reply guys! yeah 1 year wait was a long time.. but actually I put it on hold because I was in the middle of doing house renovation.. :) glad I did it.. not sure if F30 320d will make me regret buying this year or not. hahaha..
