BMW expands the 5 Series line-upThe 5 Series engine range grows to 11 derivatives with the arrival of the 520i and 528i models for September 2011. Both are powered by a new four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine employing twin-scroll turbocharger technology, high-precision direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and double-VANOS camshaft control. The 520i develops 184hp at 5,000rpm and 270Nm of torque in a broad spread from 1250 to 4500rpm, guaranteeing spontaneous response across almost the entire rev band. With the optional automatic gearbox, the average economy of the 520i saloon is 44.1mpg, while CO2 emissions dip below 150g/km. The BMW 520i SE Saloon costs from £31,190 OTR - £1,512 cheaper than the model it replaces – while the Touring is £33,615 OTR. By increasing the amount of turbo boost and revising the operation of the fuel injection system, the same basic engine is able to produce 245hp from 5,000-6,500rpm and 350Nm across 1,250-4,800rpm for the 528i. Six-cylinder performance, zero to 62mph in just 6.2 seconds for the manual saloon, is therefore feasible with four-cylinder fuel efficiency: 43.5mpg and a CO2 output of 152g/km with automatic transmission. The BMW 328i SE Saloon cost from £33,610 OTR and the Touring is £36,165 OTR. In the 525d, a new four-cylinder 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine replaces the single-turbo six-cylinder 3.0-litre unit. The new engine generates 218hp at 4,400rpm and 450Nm of torque from 1,500-2,500rpm, sufficient to improving acceleration while reducing fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent. The BMW 525d SE Saloon costs from £35,135 OTR and the Touring £37,560 OTR. Extensive modifications to the six-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engines in the 530d and 535d, both featuring variable turbine geometry, have produced increases in power and torque while at the same time achieving greater fuel efficiency. The fuel consumption of the 530d is around 13 per cent better, while the 535d now has a power output of 313hp. These models are now priced from £38,780 OTR and £44,290 OTR respectively for the Saloon and £41,190 OTR and £46,600 OTR for the Touring. The final 5 Series engine addition for September sees the 407hp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 from the 550i flagship saloon and 550i GT become available in the Touring for the first time. A BMW 550i Touring starts at £54,680 OTR. http://paultan.org/2011/07/02/f10-bmw-5-series-gets-new-2-0l-turbocharged-inline-4/

what do u guys reckon about the difference between 523i and 520i? I think the 523i just wins over the sweet revving sound only and the maturity of the N52 engine.

The new turbocharged engine wins over the fuel consumption, torque, hp. I think the turbo lag would not be noticeable because of the twin turbo engine/ technology? I noticed the turbo lag on the E200 CGI which i tested a month ago..

I think, if I have to do all over again, I would have got the new 528i. More power but cheaper road tax..! :107:

can this engine be used in malaysia? if can the 528i is super good value for road tax....pay same road tax as stupid golf gti drivers

I think it would be similar to N55 engine but with lower engine capacity. Therefore I would think so.

btw paul...the pictures of the apparent newer f10 is really just photo-shopped pictures of the original launching press kit photos from last year XD

I believe the Malaysian specs would be different since direct injection is not a favourable option for BMW here all these while?

Normally aspirated direct injection cannot

Turbo direct injection car can - 535i, mini cooper s, 740i, 335i, z4 sdrive35i, x5 xdrive35i

Do you think 520i will arrive in Malaysia ? Secondly .. i notice there is a button called ECO-PRO button ... Is it available in our 523i or 520d ?... Can anyone clarify this ?

It Should arrive

Eco pro tunes the engine mapping, throttle, gearshift, auxiliaries to maximize fuel economy

All f10 in europe from September production will have it, not sure our SKD model when

This sucks! Why can't they get a fix going for normal DI NA engines! :(

Does 4 cylinder also mean an affordable 528i in the future that we wont be breaking arms and legs to pay the retarded Gomen's to fund the Plotong regime?

Import tax and duties are based on CC of the car, so 2.0 litre engine will pay less tax to the government compared to the old 3.0 engine, and also roadtax also cheaper la.

OMG...the govt is going to lose lots of tax money. I think next they will tax hp of car, not engine cc anymore.

True enough but the Mercedes E200/E250 CGI are both 1.8l engines, I don't see them being sold at any cheaper prices. The Euro has fallen almost 20% from its peak in late 2009/early 2010 too but european car prices are where they are. I just feel that the car dealers are still trying to maintain their profit margin in the long run :D

Unfortunately for us, gone are the days of sub-300k 5-series, the last one was the E39 I think. Let's hope with CKD/SKD VW cars BMW will feel the pinch and actually provide better service/warranty even if their car prices remain the same.
