Soon you'll be able to hear Beemers with blowoff valves and on board software to see the turbo pressure oil pressure and so forth . What next?? Nitro......Nah too american
blow off valve for bmw is available in the market for song long those 335i fixed it.

Long stroke = torque, larger bore diameter = horse power. Looks like the engine is designed to gain more torque compensation from the FI rather than HP..

Huh? Can you explain further bro? Don't understand your conclusion. I thought those specs show a more over-square engine...

what's the different interms of feel with driving a 6 potter? with this turbo-charged 4 pot it will be faster than 6 pot rite? can u actually feel the engine is 6 or 4 by driving it (without actually being told wat engine)?

In one word, refinement. You can hear and feel it without being told.

this will trump the Audi a4 2.0 liter

by the time this hit the street, OOOO will do another Vorsprung durch Technik on a newer product...:smokin:

Exactly! Donno how to explain, u gotta drive and own one for sometime to really feel the soul of it.

Actually, in terms of power & torque for this new engine it is nothing new to shout about.
Evo's and Scooby's done that decades ago with their 2.0 four pot with 286 gentlemen agreement horsepower.

What is significant is the refinement and efficiency: 7.9 ltr/100km !! Enjoy....
Even better if BMW can bring in the soul... or at least simulate / fake or something. he he he

BMW are working on a sound re-producing technology which simulates sounds of a bigger sylinder like a V8 or I6 aka faking it lol It's called ' BMW active sound design' ... Personally i don't like it

"With the use of active systems for sound design, engineers can actively shape and optimise interior sound and thus systematically influence “heard” dynamics. In order to produce the desired sound patterns, the natural sound of the engine is intelligently refined with an electro-acoustic system. A digital signal processor interactively generates additional sound components based on constantly updated driving data so that a harmonious overall impression is formed. Initial research projects have already shown how effective that is. In a MINI prototype presented in 2009, a four-cylinder engine can be made to sound like a powerful V8 engine or superior straight-six engine."

The only sound enhancing additions should be engine and drivetrain related i.e exhaust and intakes NOT an acoustic reproduction of an engine generated by dsp ... That's pretty lame ...

Perhaps there'll be Active Sound selections in iDrive: Original, BMW in-line 6, Porsche flat 6, Ferrari V12 & Harley Davidson V-twin.

Not pretty lame, VERY lame. As I said, the day they lose the purity of their DNA is the day I walk away.

had a chance to own 3 different engines, a M40, a M50 and currently a M60.. the M40 is rough n noisy engine, the six is seventh heaven with scream i can still hear now in my ears and a eight which is souless and super silky smoothness....

all hail the six soul engine...

you're driving the wrong eight la meow meow.. trust me, the soul is in eights.

Complete with equalizer, sub woofers, pre amps to your liking! Hahaha!

I think they are working to make artificial engine noise for electric vehicles too! not for soul, but safety

Such a welcome engine to BMW's stable, and about darn time too. Specs for the new X1 with this engine is a whopping 6.1 seconds 0-100km/h for the manual and a 6.5 secs with the 8 speed auto. Pretty darn quick and enough to have the 2 ltr 4 pot X1 outdrag an Audi A4 2.0 Quattro!

I hope that they will mate this lovely engine with the 7 speed DCT for the upcoming 3 series.

My view is that performance comes before soul. Best if to have both of course, but if given the choice between raw performance vs. soul, the choice is obvious for me.

I guess that's the technology trend, smaller displacement and force induction. BMW's going twin turbo, Nice! Merc dropped supercharging and vw's twin charge (supercharging with turbo) not popular. Watch out vw gtis and audis a4s.

Same here Spacey! First learnt the refinement and class of the BMW in-line 6 in my mid-nineties E36 M52. :top:

Doubt that the last batch of E90 will be fitted with this engine. Too much changes required for the car, the placement of the engine, the cabling, the hoses, the electronics, basically the entire schematics of the car has to change just to accomodate a new engine, so highly likely not. They will only do it on the new F30 platform.

Too much changes is not an issue. The current F10 & X1 already taking the engine swap. And most cars are designed to take various engine types, sizes & gearboxes.
I still remember the last batch of E30's where new engines for E36 dropped into E30's engine bay - 318is & 325is.
If we do get them on the last batch of E90, that would be great way to sample of things to come of the next F30

The 318is's M42 was developed based on the M40.... Then it went into the E36..
As for the E30 325is, it's still the same M20B25 from the E30 and E34 range....

Love it since the E36 time...

yes, one really reliable engine, can tune into a turbo and sc an best of it, the birth of the 6cyl; the M30 engine...

Very true that those were good engines pussy, but I wouldn't call the M30 the birth of the in-line 6. They were first produced around the start of the 20th century, and MB were making them as automobile engines long before BMW; for WWI and WWII vehicles. Mechanically more vibration-free than V6s, BMW is the marque that has stayed true to the L6 format although virtually everyone has migrated to V6, including MB.
