Has anybody here done a engine top overhaul? And when do u require a top overhaul?Cheers

Do a compression test if your compression way below the compression spec. then top overhaul the engine. Compression test can diagnosis of how an engine is operating then use this number(data collected) to determine how well the mechanical components - rings, piston, valves, head gasket - are maintaining a seal. Depending on design and purpose, some engines will have high compression and others will have low compression.
Easy to say if your engine cant compress properly then you got problem with your ring or your head gasket.
But when your exhaust producing white smoke /if your air flow meter is correct then definately top overhaul was required.

i also plan to do overhaul by myself....
but not sure about the timing for my engine...
really no power le... sigh...
hahaha

The japanese engine have aftermarket product like metal head gasket. Is the such thing for M20 engine ?

DIY engine overhaul? it will involve considerable skills & more importantly - a number of specialist tools........ie. access to a re-boring & skimming machines.

Check compression and you will know if it's due or not......then strip engine and you will also see if a complete overhaul is necessary or just a top end job.....

I would classify this as a specialist job......but then this is due to my low DIY skills!

Its a myth that there are so called "specialists" in BMW engine rebuilding here, I am talking about the workshops that we commonly go to for servicing and repairs. I have seen numerous workshops doing overhaul and etc (M Power especially!), and they dont even follow procedures. I once asked Mr. Nathan, how come he doesnt use plastic gauge to determine whether the engine bearings and conrod bearings are worn out. His reply was he didnt know where to get it, well I told him can get it at Jln 225!

And how often, do you see a mechanic perform a compression test,...unless you request for it! !

aiyahhh...al....thats becoz Malaysia Boleh....

Hmmm....the lack of professionalism and competence in local workshops....this is another topic worth its own thread I think....all i know is I will run my engine to the ground ....unless the rust gets to it first :)

Yes, I do agree the mechanics here could be better.......but then if they are all paper qualified....like those we see in Oz, Germany....please also expect to pay for their "education".

My best advice is once you find a good local mechanic, stick to him......and yes, keeping an eye on them or his downliners ( kuncu kuncu ) are also helpful, hence I try to help, get thick into the action when I can.....of course having an rough idea on what they will do next is good also.

Back to the overhaul bit...the least you can do is to be there when they strip the engine and see the internals yourself.....then decide jointly what is necessary....that's part of the FUN too - educating yourself!

if they dun offer you a good explanation on why they do this or why the change is needed or why the book says this and he says otherwise - look elsewhere. You must TRUST ur mechanic but 1st, evaluate carefully his work.....

Just my 2 kupangs okay. ( dun tembak me...)

I went to them a coupla times & I dunno abt others' experience but this dude I find, doesn't even do proper customer service procedures. I never asked for an all points check on my ride but he charge me for it!
As for his repair procedures, again I dunno-man, one of his sr. mechs took half a hr. just to try & assemble the tool for extracting the rear trailing arm bushes on my e30 and another 90 minutes to extract & replace them. I ain't never going back to them.

I do not know this mechanic nor patronise his services.......but since I assisted my mechanic to do the same rear trailing arm bushes replacement, I can say it is not EVERYDAY they get to do this.....and hence the press fittings they need for this could be not found easily!

Cheers!

Jules bro...where'd u do this trailing arm bush thingy?

2cents....confirm subframe bush thing will take hours...if have the tool better but no tool prolly whole day or more...I am planning to do mine at Mpower Tmn Mayang ...apparently they have the tool...mr nathan said half day to do it. Any othe suggestions where I can do this?

Did lower arm bush (offset type :) very nice) yesterday at BM Auto Segambut....took 2 hours or so....and that is with pulling tool...

Trailing arm bush and Diff housing bush* are my next targets...would appreciate suggestions of competent and specially equipped workshops to do this. Thanks!

*if i can find this bush that is...was told diff to get

I dunno wher else u can chg ur bushes but my point is dat if he had bin better organized, his mech wouldn't hav to waste such a longtime just to try & figure out which of der presses for the extractor fit each other, let alone work at the extraction & replacement!
No wonder it takes half a day - mus make allowance 4 being disorganized, temporary incompetencies & picking up der learing curve again-lah.
