Go for Castrol Edge 5W-40. Tried it on my M52 engine and it's been great so far. Didn't suffer from any evaporation loss.

Cheers

I concur. I tried on my M54 engine with the same result. No eveporation loss after 14,000 km.

Wah! After 14k km!! that must be BMW-LL08.. :p

Now doing 14010km since last oil change. No signs of evaporation, seriously.:top: The colour of the oil also doesn't turn so dark.

Always start with the thinner synthetic oil... as long as you are not suffering from evaporation or leakage in the system, you are alright.

Why some people say old engine not suitable for thinner oil? that's because once the engine get used to thicker oil, switching to thinner oil will result in leakage in the system, be it wet engine or white smoke. As long as you are not suffering from these, go thin! 0w-30 if possible.. Good pick up, light engine, light rev, good FC, good heat transfer, same protection... unless u complain engine noisy lor..

I really miss Castrol SLX 0W-30. It actually made my engine quieter, not noisier eevn though it is an SJ rating. Petronas Syntium 0W-30 gives that noisy effect. SM rating some more! Not only that, there's some sand-in-my-engine feel with this engine oil. Very rough, irritating feeling. I trust Castrol for my BMW. Nothing else.

how many litres of oil does a E90 325i required? 6 litres? 6.5 litres?

thanks

dear forummers..
anybody tried AMSOIL European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil? think of change to this oil.. tq

I just changed my E90 intermediate 14000 km oil change. Ravenol 0-40W Fully synthetic, made in Germany. Very smooth and more responsive than my previous oil. its also LL01 rated.
4.7 liters used. cost is 50rm/litre.

Got oil lost issue ka? Since the oil so "cair".. :p How many km already?

I agree with what Kelvar30 said : for Malaysia climate, 40weight is more ideal.
0w weight is fine, but I prefer 10w. The less "wider range" an engine oil is, the less modifier it required. Thus, generally the oil can last "longer".

0w-30 or 5w-30 is now a recommended oil for most newer vechicle because is more enviroment friendly. (more fuel per tank). But I prefer my engine oil to have higher HTHS>3.0 and cSt@100c>12.5. Most ACEA A3, weight 40, and/or MB229.3 engine oil meet this requirement. Is always better to be on safe side when my engine sees 6000k rev constantly :) (*cough, it won't drift below 5000k. Damn torque!)

To reduce "evaporation" issue, looking for higher Flash Point.

So my choice of oil is : the cheapest, and easiest oil to find that qualified ACEA A3 and MB229.3, with oil weight of 40. :D

I concur to the above as well but for me, after using 5W-30, I am not going back to weight 40 oil, no way!..

afta 10k km normally on the idrive indicator drop one to two 'box'/point only...no message to ask to top-up...

i normally change my engine oil every 10k km...during the oil drain, you can see that the oil got thicker...precursor to the fact that if u dun change oil then slugde built up is unavoidable...

that day i was at one of the AB and happen to walk pass the workshop and saw a 523i engine being stripped off...i saw in the engine there is alot of thick sludge and really look like thise play doh kind of texture in the whole engine...i heard this car is serviced based on the CBS thus an oil change is normally at 25k km or more...summore the mileage very low at 50 to 60k km
