Guys, anyone experienced getting caught in a flood and the car dying on you? My 320d had to unfortunately experience this and is now alone at the bmw workshop waiting for their verdict on the extent of the damage. Here are the sequence of events:1) Car stalled after water went up to levels slightly higher than kidney grill2) Took numerous times before car sputtered to a start where i parked to avoid causing more conjestion3) Heavy white smoke coming from exhaust4) Towed to workshop. Can still start and drive up to tow truck and down to parkSigh...what a day

To add on, car is only 3 months old, so not sure if BSRI will cover this if need be...double sigh

my uncle drove his merc E350 through flood after seeing kancil can went through it before his engine died and all instrument warning lights turned on. it was found that the sensors gone

what i know is that you need to remove water from the cylinder so when it is complete dry combustion can happen. normally just remove the spark plug and crank the engine so water can get out through the spark plug hole for petrol cars. but for diesel, i have no idea. and bro, try check all the sensors as they may damage for being rinsed. newer car model comes with technology unlike kancil. so try to stay away from any stagnant water above your ankle

some insurance company do cover natural disaster but it's optional

I hope u did not attempt driving thru with water levels above kidney grill - that's simply too high

I can't help u here but as info for others - when I had the powerkit installed, I asked where the improved air scoop was located, he says same place - which is inside the mesh grille next to the passenger side fog lamp. So, do NOT attempt drive in bumper level waters cos coupled with the stronger air suction of 320d, it's too risky.

Unfortunately, warranty n bsri will not cover u in flood-related repairs not unless, u hv added 'special perils' in your insurance coverage. Anyway, hope it's a minor issue n wish u a speedy resolve

Sorry to hear about flood damage to your 320d bro.

With all this unpredictable rain and climate change, the situation may become more common in the future.

X5 or X6 might be the wa to go in the future sigh...

Good luck with the engine repair anyway - fingers crossed it won't be anything too serious or expensive to fix!

Guys, drive slow and when you think it's risky, don't take the chance to cross. Our cars has too many electronics. I will normally find a place and park aside if the water level is more then 1/3 of tyre.

Bro... For diesel engines smoke gives u hints... Normally black smoke= unburnt fuel , white smoke= water in system , blue smoke= engine oil in system...
In your case can say obvious is water enter your combustion chamber...
Going thru high flood waters there's a few places water can enter but I'm guessing it's thru ur air filter into the cylinder heads and into combustion chamber when the valve opens..
Should stop the engine immediately in this case...
Coz if water continue to build up in the liners(chamber) and your pistons push up...
Worst case if you will end up with conrod thru block...
Your piston n conrod will slip and hit your block...
If block pecah then habis lar...
Anyways if water enter system d then a comPlete overhaul of the engine is in order...

Sigh...what a day

Did you get caught in the unfortunate Jalan Tun Razak flash flood? I'm really surprised that this would happen cos the SMART tunnel supposed to remedied flash flood in the city... unfortunately... don't know what went wrong.

Anyway... I'm sorry to hear this. 3 months old and you encounter this. I know how it feels cos I was caught in a flash flood once (many many many donkey years ago). Guess what... in a matter of 5 mins.. I saw the river along Jalan Dang Wangi overpoured and flooded the low lying areas and i couldn't escape... your water up until kidney grill is already what i consider pretty high but not worst. Mine was up until the roof. I could only watched in sadness and accept fate.

But the lesson i learned, is never to start your car after it is flooded. You must not allow the water to enter your combustion chamber. Thus, it is better to tow away the car and allow the workshop to sort things out.

My damage then was quite significant but cost is not as high as BMW. I'm driving Potong ma then... :p
1) Engine overhaul
2) Strip car to bare body (dashboard, seats and etc) and deep clean. Apply layer of anti-rust
3) Professional car seat clean
4) New dashboard and new interior lining
5) Assembly cost...

Overall, car is as good as new... but I have to be honest... it will never be the same anymore. Perhaps you experience not so worst like mine...

Hope the damage is minimal and you could get BSRI to cover it...

where did this happened? bros, as being told by the driving instructor from BMW last few weeks ago at quill , all bmw shall not passing through a water deeper than 5 inch...so be alert to the water depth..do not passing thru..ever...all u can do is just wait at the safe place. Fully switch off...our Efficient Dynamic is the main reason why our air suction being design lower than before...so buy a flood coverage if you dare to go through the flood...

With all the sensors attached to the car you have to be very wary when driving on flooded or even during heavy downpour ... Water laced with mud can temporarily screw up your sensors like the wheel speed sensor and so on ... So when driving during heavy rain i try to avoid driving through a pool of water (tho very hard to resist lol)

Anyone have experience and/or info on adding flood coverage to your insurance? I've googled a bit and not all the insurance companies have this option apparently.

sad to hear this bro, this days the weather in KL is really unpredictable , i myself few years back happen to be at traffic light and you can see water level go up in a gush less than 30 second from wet road till 2/3 of tire ( proton waja ) , car died i have to come out and push the car ( it was a manual car ) lucky after 30 min i can start the car sold the car quickly after that . nowadays before go out of house i have to check weather and where i am going. if the place is ok ok i drive the bmw , if not i drive my wife mitsubitshi asx , i tend to drive suv to KL now as i am worried about flood. like bro wobbles say maybe we need to get X5 or X6 next time.

Just renewed my comprehensive insurance last month and included flood coverage for the first time. Did it with Etiqa and was quite smooth. They charge 0.5% of the insured amount - i don't know if that's industry standard or if other companies will charge less.

So wobbles, remember not to lower your F13 spring if you plan to drive it up to Malaysia...

Try google Chartis. They offer nature disaster insurance as i got their mail on this

Hey guys thanks for all the concern. As for now, BMW is still testing the car..flushing out any remnants of water and reflushing till satisfied. Then a compression test. Then my fate will be decided..sigh..to add insult to injuries my German ordered plate was sucked out of its plate...best case no or minimal damage..worst case overhaul which will set me back 50k...guess life has its funny ways of teaching me a lesson..lol..
Anyway it happened behind Berjaya Time Square (next to shaw parade) so u all please please avoid that area at all cost..just took a split second..can't explain how painful this is..sigh

Btw u all should get flood protection looking at how erratic the weather can be..at least I'm living proof how painful a flash flood can be :p I wouldn't curse this upon anyone..lol..drive safe y'all
