Bro Herbert, i share the same thoughts. But unfortunately, not many mechs would want to do an overhaul. Only 1 out of 5 that i enquired are willing to. Most says that each piston rod alone costs RM1k. Also, cylinder head needs to be changed as well if scratched. It would usually costs >RM10k in my situation, they say. Time required would be double too.

Rebuilding an engine takes time & expertise and sadly most mechanics are just want to make quick $$$ hence their preference to swap engine. Getting a used engine is always a risk i.e. the unknown condition of said engine.

Do take your time and find a workshop that has the proven and track records of rebuilt expertise. The damaged engine needs to be opened up and parts dismantled completely for actual assessment of parts to be replaced. Until this is done, what the mechanic said earlier is only a guesstimate.

Sorry to hear this bro.

Unfortunately, I am also in the same predicament. My e92 stalled on the road due to flood water. Same height as you described. Water went in through exhaust.

Been at the workshop for 2 weeks. The mechanic is pushing me to change the engine. He's hesitant to take it apart.

The options are evident - either overhaul or change engine. Searched the market, quoted at 8k per engine (N43) with trade in.

Anyone has a reliable mechanic that can do a better assessment? Or less hesitant to take the engine apart.
