Dear 323i owners,

May i humbly ask if any of you have face any engine oil consuming issues? As in needed to top up your engine oil just after a month or so or after some travellings? I was told by a few parties (both authorised and non authorised workshop) that the 320 and 323 basically have this characteristic in consuming engine oil fast. I cannot confirm this without your experience out there. Therefore, i would really appreciate any words from you guys before my dad make any decision for his new car. Either 323i or C200...both are nice cars but my heart lean more towards the 'propeller' ;)

Thank you all.

Regards

EuJax, more info here>> Topping up engine oil for 3 series

The 320 is running N46 4-cylinder alloy block while the 323 & 325 is running the N52 6-cylinder Magnesium Alloy block engine, same as the E60.

Our 320 is less serious in oil consumption, mostly when the oil top up indicator lit saying short of 1L, its service time and we just replace the oil. So to give u an example, my 4-potter needs 4.25L of engine oil and I only pour 4L and run the 320 with 0.25L short after oil change, now it's 9k km traveled, and my indicator only say I'm 0.75L short.. and I'm so close to my next oil change.. So like I say, I only run 4L in my 320.. :p no top up needed despite some oil consumed.. :D

For the N52 on the other hand, refer to the above thread and its all about this "issue".. not to mistaken it as a "problem". It's just been a commonly known and acceptable characteristic of the N52 award winning engine..

Well, if the other manufacturers or salesmen is using this "issue" to bad mouth our N52, then you tell them, we also have a "no spare tyre" issue.. :p

EuJax, this "issue" should not put you off cos it's easily remedied via regular monitoring of your electronic oil level indicator and following the service schedule strictly. Some here even do intermediate oil changes between regular service. The latest info is this, due to so many complaints and the huge costs incurred by BMW in repairing damaged engines, the authorised dealers are now re-setting oil change intervals much closer even under BSRI, which in my view will certainly fix the problem i.e. such issues won't arise anymore if you're under BSRI. I think they should have done this earlier in light of our hot weather, but for EuJax, this means no such problems in future, I hope.

hi Juan,

Please pardon me but what is BSRI? Appreciate your feedback and advice a lot. Thanks buddy.

BMW Service and Repair Inclusive = BSRI

Its a maintenance package comes with the car that covers certain wear & tear items like engine oil, brake pad etc.

Sorry bro. I forgot to ask them that. Silly me cos it's quite a pertinent question. I'll post here when I speak to the Service Advisor again.

Pssst.... I'm on membership recruitment drive la, and Schwepps is top priority, heh!

Hey must remember... we want Quality... not Quantity.... Nevertheless, Schwepps is definitely a Quality one :top:

By the way, it is very common for N52 engine to top up 1 liter of oil at every 7,000 kms to 8,000 kms of traveling. It is the engine oil sensor that monitors the level of engine oil. So, when it detected a drop of oil level, it will alert us for topping it up. If you don't want to see the appearance of indicator to top up oil, then it is recommended for you to do an engine oil change or service at every 7,000 kms to 8,000 kms interval. Do not follow the 25,000 kms service interval which I personnally discourage it.
