why do you need to do "on wheel" balancing for the rear wheels?

Hi Jarance.

The workshop guys advise me since my car vibrates even when 60Km/h. Now its ok.

My e-39 vibrates at speed 80 to 100 km and have done front on-wheel balance with no improvement. Do you mind telling us how the workshop did your rear wheels on-wheel balancing?

Did the following at M Speed on Monday

Hello there - I sent my E46 325I to M Speed for service and was recommended by Meng to change the following, which I eventually did and paid hefty RM8K in total. There are few more I need to do next week (due to parts availability) - but I would get expert opinion on the pricing before I decide to return to finish the outstanding. My car is year 2005 with 59K mileage now.

1) ABS sensor (OEM): RM300 X 2
2) Door moulding (claimed original): RM680 X 2
3) Oil separator (claimed original): RM800 [included vent hose, vent pipe, pressure valve, return pipe]
4) Lower arm (OEM): RM1,500 per pair
5) Fuel pump (OEM): RM500
6) Oil filter housing gasket (OEM): RM100
7) Valve cover gasket (claimed original): RM300
8) Micro filter (OEM): RM100
9) Ignition coil (Bosch): RM120 X 6
10) Wiper blade (Bosch): RM120 per pair
11) Side signal light (OEM): RM70 X 2
12) Front absorber (OEM Sach): RM1,600 per pair [included mounting, damper, cover]
13) Link rod (OEM): RM100 X 2

He further advised me to follow up with:
1) Expansion tank (claimed original): RM380
2) Engine oil gasket (claimed original): RM430
3) Engine mounting

He also introduced paint specialist to me for repainting whole car externally, options:
1) High solid: RM2,500
2) 'Ga' solid: RM3,000 - unsure of the spelling

Appreciate any advices.

Do introduce yourself in the BMW newbies section for the rest of us to know you better. :)

Certain parts (highlighted above) are overpriced. But that's normal since mechanic normally jack up their prices to increase profit margin, since labor charges can only be that much. The truth is, many BMW parts are actually on par or cost only slightly more than Japanese counterparts. Many mechanics would assume BMW owners are comfortable of paying that much since BMW is always branded as premium car makers.

I believe many BMW owners here have learnt the hard way of paying so much extra during the initial ownership as many do not survey the market prices. However, most of us have since learnt and be a smart BMW owners.

Just piece of advice, do survey part prices before committing to repairs by mechanics. Do check with BMW parts stockist. Below are some names (Contact numbers can be obtained via Google):

- Bavarian Auto (largest parts stockist with branches at Segambut, SS2 PJ, Subang, Cheras Maluri etc.)
- Munich Auto, Segambut
- Inner Power, Jalan Ipoh
- Bomin Auto, Jalan Ipoh
- Suan Huat, Taman Paramount PJ

Thank you for the guidance. I forgot to mention the prices mentioned above included labor. However I still feel it was on high side.

Certainly will check with the stockist before my second trip to M Speed. Do you think we can procure the parts directly from stockist and have BMW specialist to fix?

Hi Bro,

The workshop basically jack up my car for each rear tyre and put the spinning device.

not to sure whether it is the correct procedure as this is the 1st time I did on-wheel balancing. :)

it depends on how close you are with the mech...most mechs will not bother coz they won't earn much if cust bring their own parts. Try to nego with him and see what he says. If he is reasonable enough you can get it cheaper if not well...walk away and go to another one.

Agreed with WZ...most of the parts listed are a lil if not pricey...

Repair wisely :)

I'll die of shock if I was presented with that bill. I mean, what's the point of buying a really low mileage car if you still need to spend like that? My view is some of the replacement maybe unnecessary, but I dont actually know the condition of the car. 8k spent and still need to come back for more? Give me shivers.

I am feeling bad now, must have been misled by MSpeed. I hope to meet you guys in person for more insights - will try to make it in the next gathering.

By the way, where can I get good repaint services and re-wrap the interior: A/B/C pillar and roof.

Thank you in advance.

Rear window, driver side cannot be closed/opened, opened it up and found that the steel wire got tangled, the plastic holding the wire cracked.

I am still considering for top overhaul of my N42, but got quoted for different prices (huge difference), i am wondering, if anyone that had done the top overhaul, can share the price (with its breakdown) so that i knew what i m getting (and why the huge price difference), or point me to that posts, if readily available :p

Thanks.

Any sifu experienced similar problem before? What was the resolution? Look for advice ...

Sounds like bearing but have you checked the fronts? Could be the long shaft too. Axle hardly fails. Try changing the axle fluid first which doesn't cost much. Change the seals too while you're at it.

Axle fluid was changed in Jan2013....will try check the front bearing and long shaft....thanks sifu ;)
