Dear sifu's,I lost my E46 - 318i (yr 2004) keys last week (and one week cannot start the car) and just got a replacement one from AB today and it cost some $$$:argh:Upon collecting the key, the sales guy told me to manually un-lock the car using the and then start the car.Got back and tried to do as advised, but I am unable to unlock the car. The key is not turning to the left or right either, but I am able to open the car booth.Pressed the new keys remote button and tried to unlock, but doesn't seems to work.Any idea how can I get the car unlock using this new replacement key? Please advise sifus.Thank you much.

Did they only give you one replacement key?
Turn the key further past the 45 degrees that you usually unlock the car with. Somewhere between 45-90 degrees, the key would mechanically unlock the door manually.
The normal 45 degrees method would just engage the door lock motors to unlock the doors for you. Take note that this may trigger the alarm siren. You have to get into the car and turn the ignition for the car to recognize that its a valid key but a new electronic code.

Bro Game-R,

I've tried doing that. But no luck as the key cannot be turned to left or right either. (clock n anti-clock wise). The unlock button on the remote also was not functioning when I tried to press it.

You need to resync the key in order to use the remote function. Since you cannot open the door you cannot perform the resync. You may try to spray wd40 into key hole to try to unjammed the lock.

Bro Jarance, I will try to give it a shot. spreay wd40 into the key hole and try to unlock it again. thanks.

If after resync still not able to use remote to open the door then u will have a big trouble. It could be the reason as below:
1. Remote receiver(Antenna amplifier) having problem
2. The key frequency not same with the remote receiver.

Have u use ur key to open the door before ? If the answer is no then is actually using 1 key for start then another key for open the door.

AB could have just fook up and got you the wrong replacement key... That could be one of the many reasons too.

Good luck and hope you'll resolve this issue soonest. Do update us here on what went wrong so others may learn from your experience.

I got a crazy idea. I think it is possible to open the door from the boot. Since you can open the boot, you can most probably open the doors.

If really not able to resolve all the problem then just meet me to find out what is the reason cause this problem. Dont worry, meet me for finding out the problem is always FOC ...................hehehehehehe

There is a possible reason that the start engine key can open boot but not able to open door due to the door lock has been changed. Alot of lock smith changed the lock but just put the new lock instead of original lock key thread.

dear friends / sifu's,

got the 2nd replacement key from AB today and it cannot be used as well. i'm going crazy already. 3 weeks didnt start the car.

now AB wants a photo of the chasis number near the engine. I told them, I cannot even open the door, how can I get the chasis # from the engine.

tried spraying wd-40 in the key slot, but did not work either. I'm trying to get hold of a key / lock smith who can get it open. Anybody knows any good lock / key smith in Johor? don't know what else to do already. help :burnout:

According to what u said................open door and start engine keys are not same. Meaning the door lock has been changed. The lock smith never put back the original key thread. If this is the case that lock smith is not good enough. Last time one of the e46 of my friend door lock having problem, then he bought the lock and i help him to change the lock. But i put back the original key thread.

I also advised some of our members which meet me before test the start engine key can open the door or not. If not able to open the door then fast make the open door key.

bro tweiboon,

meaning now can I just have the lock smith to change just the door lock (a different key)? after that I will have two keys. 1 (from AB) to start and the 2nd key is just for the lock?

Whoa, still in the same spot!
Okay, crazy ideas time. Your E46 doesn't have a small "skis" access port between the booth and rear seat arm rest, does it? If you got a small kid who can fit through it ...

On a more sane suggestion: I'm guessing that you have only one keyhole (other than the boot) on the driver's side door right? Have you been using this key often or most of the time you've been using the remote function only?
Try taking a long narrow metal prod or scraper and reach into the keyhole and try and scrape free any dirt or dead bugs that may have stuffed up the hole that would prevent the key from going in fully. A vacuum cleaner would help too.
Then ensure that the key is pushed all the way in before trying to turn it. Every time you're unable to turn the key, pull it out slightly (0.5-1 mm) and try turning the key again. It may be possible that your key is only slightly different than your worn out keyhole and you'll need to keep trying a few times till hopefully it finally can unlock.

bro Game - R,

E46 doesn't have a small "skis" access port between the booth and rear seat arm rest, does it? - Nope it does not have the skis access. I've checked on it earlier.

have only one keyhole (other than the boot) on the driver's side door right? - Yes

Have you been using this key often or most of the time you've been using the remote function only? - I Use only the remote all the time.

But from what bro tweiboon has stated, I think there were two different keys (one for the door lock and the other one for the ignition). I'm thinking of getting a lock smith to come by and just unlock the door and maybe then change the door lock.

Adviseable to do this?

From what I know, there are only three different keys that BMW provides. The standard key for all locks (they provide two of this). One valet key that operates door locks and the ignition, but unable to operate glove compartment and boot. And one emergency key, narrow plastic key with no remote, for emergency situations like this.

You've gotten the car from AB and not some sneaky dealer who could have messed with the locks or anything like that?

You're sure the key is able to enter fully? It would be hard to tell if there was a small stone that got into your keyhole and is preventing the entire key from entering. If only one millimeter off, the key won't be able to turn at all. Furthermore, you said you've always been using the remote to lock and unlock the door. It might be possible of dirt inside the locking cylinder after so long of not using it.

Dont need to change the lock. Ask the lock smith to make a key for u. If you dont make the key then is very simple. Use long long bar insert from the door rubber then use the long bar pull the handle then u can unlock ur door already.

Then after that use ur key to start the engine. If able to start then try to resync the key. Behind of the key is stated the frequency of the key. If not able to resync then another problem problem facing that is remote receiver have been change to another frequency. In this moment ur remote is useless to ur car already.
