My e39 got red knob at the bottom of the rear mirror. I think my car using IR remote too but now already using RF remote. Dont know what are the things that ex owner has changed.

Are u sure the red knob is purposely there for IR remote?

The red knob has a light inside (not sure LED or bulb) and it will flicker to indicate that the alarm is activated. Nothing to do with the IR thingy. My car have that.

I also dont know ..............but i ask some BMW owner and some locksmith saying same thing also. Then i call to Quill and tell them my car got red knob, then they said my car using IR remote but my car is UK spec. So if i ask Quill to make key for me then it high chances will be IR remote key.

You come to the right place. I stay at Puchong near IOI mall. Bring the e46 and meet me. Let me check the car first before i order the key for your car. Checking the e46 also need to make sure that the e46 got the EWS or not. If your e46 using after market alarm and removed the EWS then i am sorry to say that i cannot do it.

u will not regret with this tweiboon ha ha ha he just did my E46 transponder yesterday nite at IOI basement carpark and finally today i cut allready the key...start the engine perfectly as well lock unlock the doors with the trunk
