Gentlemen... does the e39 key fob has a battery in it and if yes, is it the common ones and can be easily changed at any of the convenient shops that sells batteries?

The key type "D" is rechargeable type. It is completely sealed and have to be cut at the seam (side) of the key to access the battery.

Try to resyn your key first before cutting up the key.

I had the same problem when I was experimenting with the "RESYN" function with ONE key only. After a few months, I try to use my spare key to recharge it but it could not open the door from remote. Try the "RESYN" function and it work for the spare key BUT it desyn the key that I was using. Finally have the do the "RESYN" function one key after the other before BOTH keys work.

This applied for key that is diamond shape.

Maybe you can try this procedure to resyn your key. Thanks affan66 for the link.

Initialization Procedure.

1. Open central locking system using the car key.
2. Get into the car and close all doors.
3. Using the car key, switch the ignition lock briefly to position "1" and then switch off again. Remove the key from the Ignition.
(Please do this switching within 5 seconds or otherwise the system is not ready for initialization.)
4. At the remote control key. Press the "OPEN" button (->) and keep holding it.
5. When holding the "OPEN" button, press the "LOCK" button three time in sucession.

6. After pressing the "LOCK" button 3 times, release the "OPEN" button.

7. If the initialization process is sucessful, the door will lock and unlock immediately to confirm the process.

8. repeat Step 4 to Step 6 for second key within 5 seconds.

jerman, maybe you can try your spare key for the above. I remember we did not try the above step.

My key was desyn when I was using my key in your car to demonstrate the procedure.

jarance,
Thanks for the reminder. Tried it but still does not work! Even your "open heart surgery" operation also failed to revive this key .

Jarance, do u think the "RESYN" will work if it is a 2nd hand key from chop shop?

Theoretically, YES!!!.. the GM5 module can be program to received 10 keys. but I haven't try it before.

I have read in other forum that uncut key bought from ebay can synchronize. (Note: ebay key are not rechargeable type)

If you buy key from chop shop, they are already precut... How you intend to make it fit your ignition???

So what was your final solution??

yes, i also bought one from ebay recently but failed to resyn to match with my car. I didn't notice that the battery is non-rechargable type. Maybe the battery is gone, I have done the "heart surgery" to open out the remote control and will get the battery replaced.. (it seems difficult to take out the battery as it is sealed or stick to the body contact/circuitry).

The pre-cut key won't be usable anymore. I just need the remote control to start the engine with the duplicate key as the remote control doesn't need to have a direct contact to the key.. it is RF type.

the keys also come in different frequencies. When you order, you need to make sure you order for the same frequency versions.

like mine it is 433.92MHz...

it is dependent on your EWS module... I believe you need the VIN number. When I ordered mine from AB, the VIN will determine which key I need. Check if you can do so with the Online ETK.

Affan.. how to determine the operating frequency?

the frequency is imprinted at the back of the key (the working one). so when you order, make sure you order the key with the same freq.

yikes.. I just check my key and it is all faded and cannot see it. Just managed to see the faint BMW logo..

Will try my the other key..
