Hey guys, I've been reading some forum entries containing details about a software reset on the ZF5HP19 gearbox. My 525i's gearbox occasionally jerks when shifting down from 3rd to 2nd. It doesn't happen all the time, and the jerk is very mild - only noticeable when slowing down without using the brakes or when using them lightly for a soft stop.I've done an OBD diagnostic check and there are no error codes showing for the gearbox. Nor are there any leaks from under the car. Service records for the car show that the ATF fluid has been changed every 50,000km at AB, last one being done at 100k, which is just before I took over the car from its first owner. Since it doesn't appear to be a hardware issue, I'm just wondering if a software reset might get rid of this issue on my car. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for your advice! ;)

I think the topic is discussed before..why not merge into the same thread?

Hi, not sure if it works. Previously we discussed about it before.
That was
1. Turn ur key position to on, all electronics on, but engine not started yet.
2. Floor ur gas pedal for 30sec
3. Release pedal & start ur engine

I tried it this morning. gear change is very smooth, car move from stand still very light now.
It works on a drive by wire car. So u may wanna give it a try?

Thanks, guys. Will try it out and see if it sorts out that odd jerk. ;)

OK guys. Reporting back on results.

Tried the gearbox reset. Had to do it twice, oddly enough.

First reset didn't really do much. I turned the key to "On", floored the accelerator for 30 sec, then released and started.
First sign something wasn't right : I could actually feel the engine shaking a bit after that reset - rough idling, so I warmed up the engine and drove around my condo to test it out - disappointingly, that odd jerk when the box shifts from 3rd to 2nd was still there.

Came back, parked, waited for a while and tried it a second time.

And guys...the difference in the car after the 2nd reset was amazing! Pick up is smoother now, the car doesn't feel as heavy as before and the jerkiness on shift down is practically gone! It's like I have a new gearbox in the car!

I'm just wondering, if resetting the gearbox does this kind of miracles to the car, I reckon BMW should have made the car to default to a reset everytime it starts! LOL! ;)

Congrats!

I believe the gearbox learn our driving style, actually is a friendly thing to us but just like computer sometime u gotta debug or defragment, isn't it?

My gearbox has no problem, is just that I feel recently the gear change is not as smooth as last time, I thought may be the ATF fluid time to change.(but I just changed it 20k km back) So I tried this reset thing. Everything is back to normal again!

Guess what, when gear change the engine sound which is like our old days using manual gear is back. I remember that when I first took over the car. An auto gear box which gives me very manual sound(If you step on the clutch fast while gas pedal is not completely released yet.

May be it should be done very few months or half a year.:top:

Enjoy ur car!

Looks like it may be a good idea to de-bug the gearbox more often eh? LOL :D

hey vroom 325...
does ur reset thingy happen in the E39 too?
wah....miracle cure?

Guys, just floor the pedal no need to click it.
It works on my car.
I understand that all drive by wire car will do.
I think it erase what it learns so far from the driver & start all over again.
Good luck!

kick down with brake = agressive driving

kick down without brake = normal driving

both tested and like the agreesive more :)

was there a significant difference felt between the 2 methods?

i did a pedal to the floor=25 seconds + heavy kick on brakes.
marked improvment in the low rev pick up.
really caught me by surprise.
but anyhow...im sure there is some placebo effect.
hehehe...

does it last or smoother for a week or so then back to normal? been reading about it and some say it doesnt last, wondering you guys's experience.

Thank you, thank you, thank you...I have to reach for duct tape to wrap my head to keep it from exploding everytime I read this "fake" reset procedure...you are absolutely correct that it's just a convoluted procedure to get ATC (adaptive transmission control) to go into the adaptive sport mode instead of the normal "economy mode"....or the "extreme economy" mode for those with the "timid toe" syndrome (aka "granny-foot").

Let me state for the record...if done correctly...your car WILL shift differently for a while...but if you are NOT an agressive driver...it will eventually "re-adapt" to how you are currently driving the car...and if the car is still in the adaptive sport mode at the end of your journey...when you turn the ignition off...the car will resume it's normal operation and be ready to "adapt" to whatever type driver gets behind the wheel next.

I've explained this in several threads...and just posted it again back on 2/2/08...here it is explained again below...plus the links at the bottom refer back to a previous thread from June/2007 that has some BMW tech info on how the ADAPTIVE transmission works (its' an adaptive tranny...which has a slightly different connotation from "learning"). The driver influenced evaluations picked up by the tranny control module does NOT store the information after the ignition is cut off....anyways...just read the info below and check out the links.

(reprint of post from 2/2/08)

Geez gotta explain the "great thread of misinformation" again from Bimmerfest...it's actually NOT a "reset" as they "assume" that it is.

All they are doing is forcing ATC to choose the (adaptive) sport mode which is different than than manually selectable EXTREME sport mode. ATC (adaptive transmission control) has 3 basic "driver influenced" modes that are chosen based on the "KICK FAST FEATURE"...where extreme economy, economy, or sport mode is chosen based on the speed and depth of the accelerator pedal versus the amount of "throttle" that the driver uses .

In a normal circumstance, an aggressive driver will press the accelerator pedal fast and further than a more timid driver...an aggressive driver will usually maintain pressing the pedal further, thus the system evaluates an agressive driver and chooses sport mode.

The "tranny reset" (fake trick) that is proposed on Bimmerfest imitates the movments of an aggressive driver by following the procedure that was just typed:
key in the ACC mode
(this turns on all electronics thus accelerator pedal movement and throttle information is ready to be interpreted)
hold gas pedal to the metal (kickdown switch depressed as well) for 30 seconds
(ATC is interpreting this action as aggressive driving behaviour)
take ur foot off the gas and hit brakes
(ATC is continuing to read this as aggressive driving...pedal to the floor then strong braking)
start up the car
(since the ignition was not turned off...the information previously detected is not erased, thus the adaptive sport mode will be retained)

The major thing is...this does NOT reset the transmission because the driver influenced evaluations of AGS are not stored after the ignition is turned off. You would have to do this everytime you restart the car, or just drive agressively, or move your gear select lever into the (extreme) manually selected sport mode.

Again, I've posted a response to this "reset" trick with the technical information from BMW to explain it...but I guess not enough people have read it because the false rumor persists.
