nice work on your car bro. it looks great :) so how's the power coming from the M50TUB25 engine and a manual tranny? haha

Dear all sifus and gurus,

I have an E36 original manual transmission with a M43 engine. I am looking to swap the engine with M50 or M52? Which is more suitable.

Considering to change the engine, what other parts need to be changed? Can I use the same manual gearbox? Will the gear ratios handle the 6 cylinder engine speed? Also do any rods or drive shafts need to be changed?

My friend swapped his 318i auto to 328i auto and he told me the estimated cost was around 4k after selling his old engine.

All help is appreciated in this matter. I am looking for a conversion with estimated cost around 4-5k. A friend proposed me 5k to do it, but I have to take the car to JB. I prefer to do it in KL where I am staying.

hey awyeah

1stly you need to set on ya mind of what type of conversion are you gonna embark on ..

if you're gonna take for instead an m50 ...you need to choose on going for obd1 or 2 ... 5 sp or 4 sp or jatco 5 speed ...

since you're using an m43 , you need the entire wiring loom to fit in for a complete workable not problematic journey ...if you're gonna cut and paste the wiring loom , you may end up facing lotsa problem towards later on ...

now the 2nd Q , are you gonna purchase the halfcut from chop shop ? if yes it will come with the autobox too ...decide which one you wanna take as mentioned above ...

swapping an 318 auto to a 328 with cost around 4K ...i've got no clue or comments as i don't know what sort of work has ya friend carried on with ...and further more selling off the old engine is not as what you may think of getting big returns after all ....some figures of items that i sold upon from my m40 engine ...autobox and rear diff rm 450 , radiator, hoses etc rm 150 , alterantor rm 150 , afm rm150 .....the whole engine rm100 and yet the person did not pay me till today ..so summing up to almost rm1K in return ...so i'm not really sure how some 1 would spend around 4 K on their conversion whereby even halfcut there days are asking close to 7K already ....

as for manual conversion .... lets keep that for the next chapter ....now it's time for you to figure out your conversion route ...

TQ

Thanks for the detailed info bro. My mechanic buys stuff from cut shops in puchong, so I believe I can get halfcut/engine cheaper cheaper than for normal customers. However, cut shops normally got the auto gearbox only as I am aware.

Yes I believe selling the old engine and its parts would be basically at 50% of the current market price, since no other option also. Yes, I am looking for a 5-speed manual tranny.

if ya mechanic is able to source from those cut shop in puchong with a lower price tag ..it would be a bonus for you then ...most cut shop only bring in auto's ...as for a manual chop one ...all the best and happy hunting ...as last i saw one being brought out from the container with a price tag almost 10K ...and yet there are already 6 ppl in the list with cash in hand ...

let us know your conversion journey soon ... :)
