Appreciate any advice from the sifus here. How to determine if an e36 6 cyl is a 328 when u inspect the engine bay?320 vs 325 vs 328 - someone told me the size of each cyl is bigger.Any markings etc which we can check? Log card might say 328 but how do u know if u are actually sold a 325?Thks

you can key in the VIN in realoem.com.
all the information will be stated.

The position of the oil cap. If it's nearer to he cabin, it's a 325. For 328, it should be near the fans.

TQ bro :top:

Indeed the engine oil cap is easiest to differentiate.

325 - near to windscreen

328 - near to fan

:fight:BTW.. you can ask the engine.. if it was 325 it can speak to you... " im better than 328" haha..

Application of M52; information from wikipedia.org

M52B20

A 2.0 L (1991 cc/121 in³) version was introduced in 1994. Bore is 80 mm and stroke is 66 mm.
Applications:
1994-1999 E36 320i
1995-1999 E39 520i

M52B25

A 2.5 L (2494 cc) version introduced in 1995, with an alloy block (at least for Europe). It produces 125 kW (170 hp). Bore is 84 mm and stroke is 75 mm, as for the previous M20B25.

M52TUB25

While retaining most of the internal dimensions and components of the earlier M52, the M52TU (Technical Upgrade) featured an aluminum alloy block in all markets including North America. More importantly, it featured a revised head design with Double-VANOS (variable intake AND exhaust cam timing) for additional improvements in torque delivery, economy and emissions. It also featured a variable intake manifold and an upgraded Siemens engine control system.
Applications:
1997-2001 E46 323i/323Ci/323ti (M52T)
1998-2001 E39 523i (M52TU)
1998-2001 E36/7 Z3 (M52TU)

M52B28

A 2.8 L (2793 cc) version also debuted in 1994. It has square 84 mm bore and stroke and produces 193 hp (142 kW).

1995-1999 E39 528i
1995-1999 E38 728i/728iL
1997-1999 E36/7 Z3 2.8

M52TUB28

Applications:

As far as I know, there are only two engine block variations of the 6 potter engines used in the E36; the M50 & the M52. The M50 is the cast iron block used on the 320, 325 & the S50 M3. The M52 is the aluminium cast block used on the 328 & the S52 M3.

From the naked eye, it is not easy to determine which model as the cover can be interchanged between both M50 & M52. The intake manifold is also different for the 2 engines, but there are also many 328s using the intake manifold from the 325.

Hope this helps, further deliberation welcome:)
