mizhan, Zoggee thanks for your usefull comments n guides. really appreciate them.

now got to seriously nego for the 16" rims from our forumners......

just for info : a fren with the same ride n same rims design n size but using 205/40-17 tires have no issue ......... but tire/fender gap is too big for my liking.

Now feeling good with 215/45/17 for whole tyre without touch the fender,hehe... Front 1 finger gap (use bilstein black+eibach spring) & rear 2 finger gap (use KYB heavy duty+Hot Bits spring). Good setting for hard driving.

bro,

good to hear that.

for me, the front one will be replaced with 205/45/17 tires ......and see what will happen then.

gist of the story : 15" and 16 " rims with the correct tires are still the best !

my rim collection.firstly using 16' 205x50 brand mullins made in aussie hub nicely fit for e30 n offset 25.secondly 17' 215x45 speedline made in japan but offset 32 need to using spacer.(sold to other forumer) latest is zauber 16' 205x50 3 pcs made in japan hub nicely fit for e30 offset 25.suspension setup front bilstein yellow b8 + eibach spring.rear kyb heavy duty with GAB spring.

Just want to share my xperiences:

E30 M40 1991 ,lowered with Koni shocks, shod with 225/45/17 tires has serious offset/fenders scrapping issues and harsh rides.Tires 32 psi.

With 215/45/17 tires, also still has this fenders scrapping issues - but only when making aggresive cornering or u-turn on uneven surface or hitting potholes/speedhumps with the tires/streering at max. angle to the fenders. But acceptable ride with Yokohoma tires, 30 psi allround.

My options : 1. Changing to 205/50/16 tires

2.Revert back to stock std. springs.

3.Shod them with 205/45/17 tires.

My main consideration will be on comfort n nice to look at .

Any suggestions ?

215/45/17 also with not much problems...

Based on my recent experience........NOT ADVISABLE.......due to offset issues..........especially if your ride is lowered.

Just sold a set of 225/45x16 tyre to E30 coupe for rear...damn wide cool from the view of rear.

with stock suspension (brand new absrbr)... i use 225/50/16 at rear also rubbing my rear
fender. my wheel width 9.5inch.

That's because 225/50/16 is way oversized. Compared to the correct 205/50/16, it's about 2cm larger in diameter.
For 16, you should use 205/50/16 or 225/45/16.

pardon me. what really different between 225/45/16 with 225/50/16.
i know the thickness of tire from road is 45 n 50 mm but the width is still 225.
does this can settle my rubbing problem if i change to 45series?
my rims cant use anything below 225.
thanks sifu.

The height profile number is not a absolute thickness, but its a percentage of the width.
So a 225/45/16 tire has a 225 * 45% = 101.3mm sidewall height.
A 225/50/16 tire has a 225 * 50% = 112.5mm sidewall height
As you can see the 225/50 is about 11mm thicker and so, it sits closer to your fender = greater chance of rubbing.

I don't know if 225/45 will not rub for you, depends on your rim width + offset.

Just want to share : Yesterday, out of curiousity ( and want to look cantik ! ) installed 225/50/16 tires to my ride.

Result : Front tires scrap the underside of fenders when making u-turn ! So revert back to 205/50/16

Note : Tires were mounted on 16/7.5" 0ri BMW rims , 5 lugs .........mod/taken from E32.
