I'm thinking of upgrading my front speakers. So I'm wondering if any of the e30 ICE guru's here have 6.5" speakers installed in the front ? As I understand, the stock size is 5.25". Just need some opinions and advice from anyone knowledgeable in this area. Cheers!

too big la... but get 5.25" big magnet speaker instead.. i had it on mine..sounds nice..

henry, i'm certain 6.5 infront would require cutting of metal which not many owners are prepared to do. i suggest you stick to 5" two-way components for the front - with the best quality/brand you can afford.

p/s - i'll be in KCH from april 18 to 27. buy me drinks, and take me to 'interesting' places :)

It is indeed true that 6.5" front speakers bring out the best in audio clarity as compared to 5.25"...

Way forward would be to have a new speaker board custom cut as per the existing speaker kick plate but with the hole size matching to a 6.5"

Pussy: thanks..i have yet to make my final decision..but these days wad brand of speakers have 5.25" sizing?

Mizhan: Sure bro..leme know a few days before you arrive! Will bring you around when i'm free..drinks on me

genozide: If possible I would like to keep things as is..no cutting and so on.

btw, i read that it can fit 6" but would require some work to be done? this includes the front bonnet handle..but does the kick panel still bolts back on as usual?

most good brands will have the 5.25" speakers... mine was the pioneer kelver pro series...magnet was bigger than 3.5" !!...thanks to kev and the previous owner..

5.25" speakers are normally 2-way speakers right ?

there are 2 type,2 way speakers is mid bass speaker + tweeter seat on it.component is the best, come with tweeter, mid bass & crossover.just get 5.25" component, get a good player such as pionner, alpine connect it with the compent set the sound will be good.by the way try to get component set not more then 60w.more than 60w the player don't have enough power to push it cause all the player is not more than 55w.pegassus got this range & sound good, trust me i being playing with i.c.e many year.

no...only e36 can use the ori kick pannel coz bonnet handle never block it but it still not bolts back on usual...the design i did for my friends e36 is cut a 1" inch high X 6 inch wide wood rings, cut the ori kick pannel cover into 6" hole the wood rigs seat on top of kick pannel cover & speaker seat on top the wood rings.

i think a suitable pair of quality 5.25 should sound ok. i switched from dynaudio 3-way in custom kicks (7 inch midbass i think) to 2-way bostons 5.25 in stock position and system still sounds decent. but i've got a sub. depends on what you're after. what do you currently run (any amps and sub) and have you got other plans on the system besides upgrading speakers?

I was actually planning to change the front speakers to component for SQL. I'm running a sub as well..powered by a 2ch amp. Speakers run thru the headunit. I'm only upgrading the front speakers to get better sound quality. Other than that..I have a decent player and sub..not looking at really high end ICE stuff..just quality sound and adequate performance to my ears hahah.

look for a good set of components that are designed to be powered by the limited power from headunits. that way they'd sound good dropped straight in and you'd still benefit if an amp is added later. i know boston does one and heard it demonstrated against a higher end model first using power from headunit and llater an amp. powered with an alpine headunit, cheaper model sounded better but with external amp the more expensive speaker sounded better. but sound from cheaper model also improved with amp.

MB Quart also quite good in reproducing sound. 5.25" good enough, no need to mod.
Or else try Focal. To me at least 4 channel power amp are needed to get a good sound. Good luck

Thanks for the input guys. I will see wad I can get my hands on hehe..few problems with my E30 just came up..probably need to fork out money for repairs..

whats the problem?

Gears are grinding when u upshift/downshift at 3k+ rpm...like got crack sound when you change gears. And my reverse lights are not lighting up...haven gone to the mech yet so dun really know wads the deal...

Good infor E30 owner on changing the front speaker, how about the rear is it the same size?

Good luck on your gear box, i am having my own episod on this too.

Cheers

most E30 i know have had the rear parcel shelf cut to fit 6"x9" 3-way speakers.. defacto standard of the 80's. if uncut, you could only fit 5.25".

today's application, put 5.25 2-way or components on the shelf, then one enclosed mono sub in the trunk.
