I strongly believe that mine is due for a rebuild, reason being, its wining like a bitch. I managed to fix the differential noise pollution by cranking up my radio a natch or two, but lately, becoming increasingly itchy to make it right. Question is, can anyone recommend a place that specialise or is very good as such rebuilds. From my personal experience, i know, that not all BMW specialists are skillful enough to work on differentials. Thus, i am looking for a proven sifu recommended and tested by others. My preferred BMW mechanic is able to rebuild it, but no guarantees offered. Sorry to say, but after spending some $$$, least i can expect from repair work carried out is a GUARANTEE. Option B, is to buy another unit, provided one i am getting is better than my own, i can sell off my old faulty unit to some one that might never want to friend in the future, reason why i shall try to avoid this option. Any recommendations?

try changing the oil.. if that doesn't work, it's either the bearings or worst case scenario would be the gear surface is scored...

I have rebuilt mine before together with my mechanic by changing the bearings. The tricky part is getting the right shims as with the new bearings, the gaps would be slightly different requiring different shim thickness...

oil was changed few thousand KM ago. Its definitely "hardware" issue.

how much u wanna sell hehehe

I'll be selling it at same price as ones sold in the market, so watch out :tomato:

its not like it cant' be used or wining is unbearable, no. I am sure it will last many more thousands. LSD is still working well.

This will be no bargain buy, let me put it this way. But if you interested, can PM me your offer.

i am still using it in my car. Never got around rebuilding it. it is still wining. But it just keeps going and going and going....

oh... and it was never for sale. So i guess: Not available.

If the unit is whining it is usually the Pinion bearings. Bearing RACES need to be replaced also, there are 4 races pressed in the rear diff. Not all bearing suppliers include these races, make sure you get them with the bearings.

there are 2 large pinion bearings that support the pinion gear shaft. this is the most stressed bearing location of the entire car, all shock loads from throttle application or lift off would transmit through these.

Also there are 2 large side axel load bearings that hold the LSD unit in place.

from experience all 4 bearings MUST change as set. Also, there are 4 races that need to be removed, the pinion races are difficult to remove and replace correctly- needs special skill set (find an experience sifu, don't be a test subject).

after these bearings are setup and installed you have another even more difficult issue: re-setting the gear lash spacing. This is a black art of sorts, the BMW TIS gives a detailed/technical break down on procedure, but this is really just experience.

if setup right the 188mm LSD unit is strong enough for 1,000hp. Not joking.

I have changed the bearings before... Can be sourced locally including the oil seals. parts alone will set u back RM600-700.
Then the tricky part is getting the right clearance for the bearing to operate smoothly. meaning the current shim plates found on your diff may not be of the correct thickness to match with the new sets of bearings... FYI, the shim plates are available in different thicknesses.

lol....all you need is a big black drag E36 to try this out :p :p
