i'm back for short while.....and you forgot my nick......so shameful of you my little.......kitten

bornfree,
look no further if you want a e30 /m50, E28Driver's car is the best speciment yet, we ( the cat and i ) manage to fix some issues during its problematic days, the car has turned out to be one of the better m50s.
i have heard of some e30/m50 converts suffering from some "problems' that's why many has sold theirs

rm16k is just the baseline cost, be prepared for at least 30k, if you want it done proper and right......

good luck

A worthy advise if you a planing the m20-->M/S5X conversion, first prepare a check list
For a starter
M/S5x complete long block with accessories (DUHHH)
M/S50 wiring harness (Possibly out of e34)
ECU (This depends on which motor you are putting in)
possibly a smaller diameter brake booster
E34 525i oil pan, dipstick tube, dipstick, oil pickup tube
E34 throttle cable
E36 engine mount arms
E28 535i or M5 engine mounts (or can use e36 mounts)
custom exhaust, (it may be possible to use a combination of E30 and E36 parts
possibly an electric thermo-fan

Last but not least PATIENCE

Thanks to all Sifu's and sharing your most valuable inputs, this topic has definitely given me and many others who have been browsing thru, what it takes to do this conversion.

bornfree,
your best bet is Grand Master Sifu YAB TS Pussy, he is now the walking encyclopedia of the M50xx conversions

Thanks Teejay for the kind words.

My e30 is now under utilised and more of a garage queen these days.

Still open to offers to someone who can takeover the reins.

One often seriously forgotten issue with DOHC 24V e30 swap is:

Suspension / footwork adjustment for 24V engine

perhaps for street use it will not be noticed; but for full racing use the suspension setup for a M20 engine is NOT DESIGNED for M50 engine. The front weight of engine increases dramatically and needs more spring rate and damping, and rear spring rate needs to be adjusted for the less rear bias weight.

With M52b28 swap the car is very tail happy; the additional torque and weight is felt dramatically. The original M20b25 dyno'ed @ 154rwhp -->
transition to 185rwhp of the DOHC 24v M52b28 engine required upgrading tire size/compound for traction. Larger front brakes also helped handle the additional velocity before corner turn in.

My experience is from racing a fully caged endurance racing E30. A street car will have much softer body and the added weight on the nose will be noticed at limit or in poor traction conditions very quickly.

a standard M52b28 E30 @ 185rwhp with ZF Sg320 gearbox and a 4,10 final drive is a sheer terror on the racetrack; @ 1125 KG weight its very rapid.
Street car will enjoy a 2,93-3.46 ratio with the ZF 5 speeder as any number higher will be very noisy at expressway speeds

hmmm sorry to beat a dead horse. I just got onto the bandwagon of E30 + M50/M52/60 swaps

Having owned other cars and swapped engines, i'm not a stranger to this.

Right now i'm searching for a halfcut but am unsure of what would fit, and what a reasonable budget might be. Am willing to keep options open and grab most halfcuts with a 6 speed manual.

More so..an experienced mech. is my main worry. Am willing drive to KL if necessary.

Better still, if anyone wants to sell a converted E30...:p

Would love to join u guys for TT but am in JB/SG :(
