hi all..hope 2get opinion from u guys(calling all sifu),tq very much in advance! :top: for now my engine already brought down, tear it apart.found major problems,4 out of 6 piston rings patah(broken).that explains d enjin oil always need to topup regularly although last year done top overhaul.now my bro ask me to buy new pistons.b4 i do this,i want to know the best option 1st.buy standard pistons,or oversized ones?(2'25)or myb chg engine?my pocket not so deep..hehe.hope to rebuild an old bmw engine to its original, like new from factory.(got few mod oso can, hehe)wil TLC my engine after this.engine is m20b23 ljet.thx again..help is really needed asap

already get the price 4 d set of 6 pistons, abt 1k plus.oversized and std one same price.or 1k can get another option rather than buy new piston?the project is to build the engine.thx again.hope to hear from u all sifu.been searching many2 times but still cant decide yet.hope somebody can guide me the best way..really love this car.

my m20b23 is also on the floor, fortunately i don't require new pistons. if cost is your constraint, go find one m20 not blowing white smoke and plonk it in. it'll be much less than the cost of a proper rebuild.

p/s - i got a sweet m20b25 for sale.. new clutch, new afm, new hoses, headers :)

if that is the best way, i opt for 2.5 swap.been searching 4 the engine, nowadays are hard to find..howmuch ar bro mizhan?thx again..!

help..help..hehe.b4 i go buy the new sets of oversized pistons end of the week..!

Jaja, if a new set of pistons cost you rm1000, you will still have to spend another RM2000 (my humble estimate) to get the engine in perfect running condition. You'd have to buy and change all the seals (crankshaft drive end and pulley end, cam shaft, timing belt set RM420 last I bought) and gaskets. it's also wise to change the water pump while you're it. Because of the broken piston rings, You may have to rebore the cylinders as they might have damaged the cylinder walls. No point in replacing the new pistons into a damaged bore! If done properly you will get a beautifully running engine but at a much hiher cost than just an engine replacement job.
An engine replacement might cost you less but there is NO guarantee that it will not fail. At most anyone selling you an enigne will guarantee it for 3 months (if you are lucky).

Bro...gearbox ada sekali ka?? PM me the price..Tq

ye, dgn gearbox sekali. anyone who doesn't haggle on price too much, i'll throw in a Dinan chip foc :)

tq all,wil ask my bro 1st.if he allow me,i'll choose different path rather than buying new piston..but my bro stated that buying another engine better don't..hasle inspection etc..hmm..

update for today: my bro insisted on me buying new oversized piston instead 2.5 motronic conversion..he said that to keep the originality of the engine part no etc.summore he said my m20b23 l-jet later he will convert to motronic.is this possible?and is plonking new oversized piston and reboring block that simple?no mod on other thing?hope to get some opinion though.tq

bump for today...aiyaa,this week i'm a bit kelam kabut, not enuf sleep doing researching.hehe

Bro. If it helps...
I just want to share a bit of my own issue with you...
I'm Alex, I'm From Sabah, I own a E30 320i M20b0 L-Jet, Saloon,
I'm a student in The Otomotive College @ TOC, and both the car and me are in PJ at the moment...
To be honest... I have the same mind set as you previously when i had the car...
Not to mention when i 1st got the car, i spend a lot just to rebuild the engine back to it's normal superb factory running condition... then as times flies by... slowly one by one punya problem timbul...
1st was the gear-box ever since the car was transported from Sabah to PJ.... Then my only solution was to change the gearbox cause the Automatic Shaft Patah inside the gearbox, which i change it to a Manual Gearbox...
2nd was the steering rack... I convert it into a E36 325 steering rack... (Worth It!!!)
3rd Engine problem... I'm still doing up the car part by part.... But new problems keep on appearing... Not to mention the parts for the engine is freaking hard to get now days...
So my last resort from all these troubles with my So Hai M20b20 L-Jet Engine is to convert to a modern M50b25...
Cause to be honest... My pocket is not as deep as last time... not to mention i'm here for study... so i have to use my own funds for my College Fees.... Think about it la bro... I have gone through it... not to mention i can actually convert into a S52 engine if i collect back what ever i spend on the M20b20 previously... but then again... I still thought of keeping the original engine... but i was encourage by a friend in BMWCM to rethink my situation... So to me... Swapping a M50b25 not only saves you from trouble of finding parts... but not to mention you get a better engine (More HP) with a bit more fuel economy to it (VANOS MAN!!!)... So yeah... This is my BMW Story...
Once i finish with the convert i will only then post my car... but now.. still collecting cash to get one M50b25...
All the best man... Think about it.... It's your car... Your Choice....

Isn't the M20B23 using the same block as the M20B20? It would be cheaper and easier to just get a decent B20 block complete with pistons and swap your crank, head, and engine number over to it.

If you want, you can change rings, bolts and bearings and have a like-new bottom end for probably less than what you'd spend on just one set of oversized pistons.

tq all.will sort all d opinion given.yalah, correct, maintaining this car costs a bomb.owning this car 4 abt 3 years costs me 10k plus oledi n d car still not up 2my expectation.isk2..but i love my car.no matter what,i'm not gonna selling my baby.need 2b patient.

maybe buying m20b25 and rebuild it(myb some minor mods)would b enuf for me.will update from time 2 time.
