what is the common problem about this cars?? is the cost for repair or maintainance is high? any advice?

In general, try to look for 6 cylinders (preferable M54 engine).
What I heard about common problem of 318i (or more specifically on N42 or N46 engine) are oil leakage, that will subsequent extend to other problem like over heating, part failure etc.
Well, you may google 318 common problem and youthey should be lot of info out there.

With proper maintenance, N42/46 will give you good return of fuel consumption and high reliability. Items requires maintenance are as follows;

this is not only for N42/46 but for all BMW engines

1. cooling system including water pump, expansion tank etcs
2. Heat ex-changer (engine and gearbox)
3. Power steering
4. lower arms
5. fuel pump and fuel filter
6. sensors - about 6 of them especially crank and timing.
7. MAF
8. Plugs and coils
9. valves seals
10. DISA flap (for M54)
11. valvetronic motor
12. engine and gearbox mountings
13. wheels speed sensors

Good luck bro.

2 weeks ago my daughter's E46 2.0 N42 just stalled while idling in the car porch. After that engine can crank but cannot start. Initially thought it was fuel pump. Ask Albert to come on site to try resolve it but fuel pump was good. He suspected the crank position sensor.

No prior warnings at all. No CEL. Mileage is 103,000 kms. Thanks to AXA Affin, one call to the toll free number auto assist the tow truck was in front of my house within half hour.

Albert replace the crank position sensor and the car fire up immediately. Car feels lighter & revs better.

Moral of the story, as a preventive maintenance, consider replacing the crank position sensor every 100,000 kms.
