First of all welcome and congrats on the E90.

By HU I presume you're referring to the head unit. As long as you have the proper adaptor, its an easy swap.

HOWEVER, you will lose a lot of functions:

1) MID (Multi-info display) not functioning e.g. trip computer, info etc.
2) PDC audio alert. If you don't have i-drive you'll be rendering your PDC (F and R) functionless
 
Welcome to the E9x community stevenlys. I don't think changing the BMW Professional unit to a aftermarket HU would be a good idea since a lot of the electronics are integrated as KL2DC mentioned. Unless of course you get a compatible unit and a installer who knows what he/she is doing of course.

I think I got the free petrol voucher as well otherwise I would be pushing the car back home :D. I got my car back in 2005 during the launch, so my SA didn't budge in giving me freebies even after much pestering :(
 
My 2 cents worth....
I think the head unit on the e90 is pretty damn good. Its SETUP for addons without having to change the HU.
So amps, preamps, shetramps, woofers, subwoofers, dogwoofers, etc are not a problem. Y
You can even hook up a nagivation system or a PS2. Or better yet, hook up a media dock to your HU :)

The fit is not that big a deal for a shop which can make a bezel. For servicing at the dealer, the HU must be in place so that the software downloading works properly. I don't know the details.

I suspect this is true for fiber optic cars only, but I am not certain.

If you want to know if your car is fiber optic:

If you have Logic 7, your car IS fiber optic.

If you don't, open the trunk and pull up the panel in the driver's rear corner of the trunk. Carefully examine the front outboard corner of the amp for a thick green cable. If you lack a thick (3mm?) green cable, your HU has an analog output and is not on the MOST fiber-optic bus.

If you do have a green cable, you do have MOST fiber optic at both the HU and the amp, and if you were my customer, I'd lean against HU changes.

For what it's worth, if you use the output of the amp, there is a LOT of EQing. If you use the analog out of the non-MOST HU and properly interface with it, the signal is clean and unmolested.

I've seen 06 E90s without Logic 7 and without i-Drive which were fiber optic, and I've seen 05 E90 without Logic 7 and without i-Drive which were NOT fiber optic.

Good one danc; same here only free air and free coffee while waiting for some paperwork. I actually had to install my car flloring carpet myself after getting bored to death waiting :mad:

I'll be taking delivery of the E90 on either Thursday or Friday this week.. I had a brief look at the car and everything seems to look alright physically however is there any areas that I ought to pay special attention to?

Yeah. I think you guys should take my car for a spin. Will give you and indication of what to expect at 80,000 kms :)

Its a pre-reg 320i SE from Sapura Auto, I do believe that it's a dec 2006 car but it is a little contradicting for me as the car has the crome rings around the aircon knobs. (I was told this was for the 2007 models).
