The Government has agreed to an automated enforcement system to curb traffic violations and reduce the high rate of fatalities on the roads.Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the system, which included the use of cameras, was being finalised.Speaking to reporters, he said the Cabinet was waiting for a detailed study of the system.“We record about 7,000 deaths from road accidents a year, and need to find ways to reduce the number.“There are several factors that lead to fatal accidents, among which are the quality and width of our expressways,” he said after inspecting the Road Transport Department (JPJ) building here which was damaged by a fire last Nov 29.Abdul Rahim said he recently visited several major cities in Java, Indonesia, and noted fewer fatal accidents there as the roads were not as wide as those in Malaysia. He said there were about nine million cars and 8.5 million motorcycles in Malaysia, and urged all parties, especially motorists, to prioritise safe driving.Abdul Rahim also said the ministry would look into replacing the damaged block, which housed Muar JPJ’s administrative and IT centres, with a three-storey building.

- Quality of the expressways is horrible, always uneven, potholes everywhere, cracks, poor design.

- Makes sense? I think most of the fatalities are on trunk roads, right or wrong? Motorbikes are the high percentage? Flying Buses because of irresponsible drivers? I think we lack road manners all in all.

Spend money on another system is wasting resources ($$) when we are already short of it. Sigh...........

No spending, no opportunity of leakage, got spending, got leakage in the system, someone will be laughing to the bank.

haha...another decision made on "assumptions" and not proper understanding of the whole picture...as long as the "decision-makers" are not "on the ground" with the rakyat and try to feel/ understand what the real problems are...then it will always be $$ thrown into the deep sea (or pockets)...

In my opinion, I don't think the majority decision-makers REALLY understand what the people are going through (e.g.fuel subsidy) coz everything they can claim, and they get from gov (the people's money)...decisions made in aircond rooms...not with the people, not for the people...

arghhhh....

then few months down the road, they will say that this is not working due to reason 1 reason 2...then abolish...then later, same cycle, implement -> spend -> abolish...

Why not have safer cars to begin with? How about undulations and water spot on highways?
Make it mandatory for cars sold in Malaysia to have NCAP ratings of 4 stars and above...
Also, make it mandatory for cars to have minimum speed of 100 km/h on highways...as it is, some are cruising at 80 km/h while another car doing 120km/h.
The difference in speed kills...
